RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

What hates school, loves learning, and isn't doomed?

I'm partial to the term "autodidact", meaning "self-taught", myself.

Hello, traveler.

This is an ancient account I have not used in a long time. My views have changed much in the intervening months and years.

Nonetheless, I refuse to clean it up. Pretending that I've held my current views since the beginning of time is what we in the industry call a lie. Asking people to do so contributes to moralistic self-loathing. "See, those people have nothing damning! I do! I'm truly vile!"

Because you can never be a good person with a single blemish on the moral record, I thought that simply entertaining some thoughts made me irredeemable. Though I don't care for his writing style, William Faulkner presents a good counterexample. He went from being a typical Southern racist to supporting the civil rights movement. These days we'd yell at him for that, probably.

People are allowed to change their views.

Nevertheless, this period of my life has informed some of how I am today. In good ways and bad ways. To purge it would be to do a disservice to history. Perhaps it will not make anyone sympathetic, but it may help someone understand.

If, after reading all this, you still decide to use the post above as evidence that I am evil today, ask yourself if you have never disagreed with the moral code you now follow. In all likelihood you did, at some point. If some questions are verboten, and the answer is "how dare you ask that," don't expect your ideological opponents to ever change their minds.

I got better. Took awhile for me to figure out how to get myself out of that bodybag, though.

Actually, come to think of it, I could ask the same of you - I'm surprised you're still here. Pleasantly surprised, of course.

How about altering words that come from another Language but mean the same? So...

Azad Shiksha? (Alter it as you wish, its Hindi)
Or...how about JPH (Joru Pora Hikhya, Meaning Knowledge from Anywhere in Assamese? Alter it too as you wish, our kind just needs to be properly recognised and treated as we deserve. And to be allowed to learn the way we actually can.

True. Really, true fact that you've got here. I'm a student of 9th and all we have in Astronomy is only about the Solar System. Go frag yourself, Central Board of School Education of India! I'll fragging murder those!

Besides, what about those kids who get bullied? And those who do not want to get stuck in social situations but do when they are in Schools? Homeschooling is wayyy better (or maybe Grass seems greener on the other side)...

Aww you poor lady, getting stoned by so many. My, what has the world come to.....Really. You probably feel really bad now, and I can't deny that you have the right to express what you think. However, we have the right to, so basically, I'm gonna add a few things, and for the sake of mine as well as your emotions, gently.

We cannot say that each and every person in the whole world is same. Sure you do see differences around you, and they do not limit to just personality.

Everyone has different ways to learn...anything, you could say. Schools had been a way to make the kids learn in a disciplined way, giving them the right amount of knowledge at right intervals, however the 'how much' is simply an average. I think kids fail because the amount of knowledge they get is too much for them, while others pass because the information they get is adequate for their brain. Those who seem lazy actually require more breaks than others, amongst other reasons. But there are kids too, for whom the information is too less. Child prodigies count. And others do too.

Along with that, the way is also quite different. For most of us, we don't like to depend on only one source. We need multiple sources, and along with that, topics that seem boring do not get any attention from us. Not because of what we want, but because of our brain working that way. People like us love to explore, to try and figure out things ourselves rather than to be spoonfed with all the knowledge that we can figure out from our own efforts and in result, understand and remember it better. And that's not our fault that our brain's hardwired to do it that way. That's the exact reason why many of us jumped against you, because it was a direct insult to us, even if you don't realise it.

Plus, the workload. You actually realise that we cannot use any other ways to learn something with all the workload the Schools give us, do you? For some, it may seem easy and quick, but our mind is NOT one-object, one-way-concentration. Its tedious for us, when many things are going through our mind, and it gets really boring when you get the exact same type of homework even after many years. None of us can focus when our mind does not want to, and our brains work different, do you even know how tedious it is?

And have you really thought about those kids that are bullied because they are nerds or geeks or are just smarter? They wish that they were homeschooled almost every day of their School life. What do you think about the kids who get treated bad just because a trait that is actually ought to be respected?

Think about it now. I doubt that you have read it without missing anything out, but I can keep hopes. This is not only for Sandra, but for any and all who think similarly. Not everyone is the same.

Calling ourselves "troubled youth" might not be too bad. After all, we are troubled, and it means something different coming from us than from scoffing old badgers. We just have to say what we're troubled with. "Youth troubled with school" might be a good phrase. We could also make use of backronyms.

RE: What hates school, loves learning, and isn't doomed?

Dude, that makes us seen as if we simply hate Schools for apparently noooooo reason, and that's SO NOT IT! Rather than that, we actually have a reason to dislike Schools and that is because we hate to be forced to learn in a way that doesn't help us learn on our own and not even let us explore.

Besides, unschooler seems........uncool. And not by our purposes.

Wanna see an example how we can learn outside Schools? I learnt American and British accents (well...of English) by Movies. No courses, and I live in India. Where you can find the weirdest accents of speaking English that are not even remotely similar to those. And with the worst grammar, don't ask. Plus, I'm learning Japanese right now, from Anime. No joke, really.

Ooh, from an awesome dude who is to be credited for this idea. How about 'Intrinsical Learners' or 'Intrinsically Motivated Learners'? Or this: "Self-Descript Learners"? (Might possibly be copied unconsciously from someone else)

I'm kind of liking the very simple term "aschooler", similar to "asexual", etc. It sounds pretty neutral and just means we don't like school.
