He should get a fancy big digital clock wih red LED count down the time, and blare every hour or so. Then do a klaxon count down at the last remaining minute(hopefully he doesnt make it to round 2, because Im going to guess he'll be ready for another round if nothing changes).

What are your parents doing about it now? Hopefully they do something to right this and hopefully thaylt not be relying on the school or government.

It isn't red, but we have a Sony Dream Machine alarm clock which might serve that purpose nicely. But on a more serious note, it needs to be taken care of. And as for what my parents are doing, absolutely nothing. That's what. They'll keep him in to the point of near-death, and won't give a damn for others views meanwhile (Mom is especially guilty of this).

Gather your family around and discuss with them about this issue tell em' some of the suggestions people have made and that a shrink won't do anything about the suicidal feeling your brother is having except give him some pills while this can be taken care of with natural means of transfering him to a private school. or you can try talking to him personaly write it down here and we will try to advice you further.

He already has an account here, but I can't persuade him to type out in length. We have no money for a private school, or anything like that (in general, he hates any restrictive environment). And as for gathering the family for discussion, I want to plan exactly what to say to them before that happens. But if you want to talk to me, like I said, I'm on Skype, so call me any time.

And..., a miracle just happened. My father, as of today, has sent notice to the Superintendent to withdraw my brother from the public education system. As of now, his suicide attempt is off. Biggrin

I don't know. Me and xcriteria have spent roughly the last 3 weeks debating various plans for him once he is out of school, but I at first plan to let the dust settle, so that Mom can recover from her shock, and I have more time to plan, and allow feedback.

I think we should try a Rizzoma thread with a bigger of people and brainstorm on this question.

A big reason many parents refuse to consider alternatives is for this very reason: They don't have any examples to look at that make them say "Wow, that's amazing! That's a better option!"

(1) Homeschool as in "public school at home" doesn't strike many parents as anything more than a time and money drain. Why not just send them to school? It also doesn't automatically make for a fascinating interest-driven learning environment.

(2) Unschooling strikes many parents as impractical because they believe there needs to be some kind of structure.

I think we need to invent a way to take a third option, document how it works, and use that at a point of discussion.

The resulting conversation quickly bridges into the question of how to "prepare for life," earn a living, and all that. That's a top concern of parents as well as learners... how to make it into some kind of worthwhile life path, short-term and long-term?

Ivo, does that sum up what your parents are concerned about?

I'm thinking all of this parallels discussions on How Do We Change the School System? and I'm Writing For NaNoWriMo.

Right now, I'm working on responding to that "How Do We" thread, but I'm also thinking there could be a better way to connect these various threads, and move toward creating some kind of output.

What's the vision for what education can look like, beyond command-and-control, and beyond just info-surfing?

Yes, actually. And a expanded Rizzoma thread would be a very good idea, thank you very much. And as for the vision of education you're talking about, we'll have to deconstruct it point by point before I'll have the slightest clue what we're talking about here.
