RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

lol kirby thanks for the translation

well, it's taught me not to care what others think. it's taught me to think (not on purpose though). basically, it's taught me that life is too short for things i don't want to do and for people who want to put me down.

Thanks to school I'm extremely anti-authority.

They say rebellion is a phase of youth, its not. Ive increased over time. In elementary school, I was mad at all the same things, but just accepted it. Now that I know I'm a person, and that the teachers and people in positions of authority over me are just people too, and they have no right to degrade me, this has made me extremely angry. I get angry even if a teacher tells a student to be quiet. Hell, even if they were bothering me, I'd still get mad that the teacher told them to be quiet. It also makes me extremely happy when a teacher calls on someone and they respond with "I didn't have my hand raised" or if they say that they don't know, and the teacher keeps pushing them, they say, "Call on someone else....". Reminds me of a quote by Che Guevara, “If you tremble indignation at every injustice then you are a comrade of mine.”. Pretty much sums me up now.

“When an individual is protesting society's refusal to acknowledge his dignity as a human being, his very act of protest confers dignity on him.”

OH! OH! School taught me all the countries and capitols of the world and basic geographic features. It gave me the change to really see and respect other cultures. (I;m mainly referring to the Islamic culture there) It taught me what insides looked like :/ (When I was four I swear to god I thought the inside of people was like the stuffing in pillows and shit) :/
It taught me that I'm a huge procrastinator ><
It taught me that if you really care, that people will bend over backwards to help.
It taught me to see in different perspectives.

But it also taught me that people lie to you, to not hurt your feelings.
And also that since I'm underaged I don't deserve respect, even if a lot of teachers give it to me anyways.

Damnit, I'm tired, bye bitches.

And and to the first poster:
I can see how much school TEACHED you.
I'm just wondering how much they taught you :/

School taught me...:

That some people will go to ridiculous lengths to impress other people
That writing down your frustrations helps a lot
That most rules are unnecessary
That I'm really weird and nobody else is like me
How to pretend to have forgotten things, when in actuality I really couldn't be bothered about it
How much fun rebelling can be

You guys are being no fun and a bit biased.
The only real reasons I would ever change the school system would be: have three weeks of school, 1 week of summer. (Better then that shitty nine month climax before I can actually take a goddamn break,) the fact that it's mandatory, and also that people can treat you badly for no reason. (I said they CAN (to an extent) but that doesn't mean 99% of them DO) But that last one ties in with the mandatory thing. And and the biggest thing I have against school is getting up in the morning D:<
Oh, and the fact that you guys LOATHE it, but that also ties in with the mandatory thing.

I think the reasons I like it more then you guys do is because.... well, I <3 lit, math, science, and (especially) history.
They're like.... my hobbies. Lawlz.

But then they make me do work that I HAVE to do :/
That's about it. If the just taught me shit, and didn't give me annoying work and annoying tests I'd love school, swear to god.
But then (yes, this ALSO ties into the mandatory thing) you have these kids that don't like school. And therefor they have to give retarded tests to make sure they learn the shit ><

God, I hate tests :/

OK, bai.

It's taught me:
trusting people is setting yourself up for a fall
never let your guard down
fear makes people do crazy things
no one is incorruptable
conformity is simply the enemy
peace won't save us
people are incredibly susceptable
misguided good guys are as dangerous as bad guys
those who don't learn from history are bound to repeat it (said by a teacher ironically)
the human capacity for denial is amazing
when fascism comes to America, it will be for our own good and have smiley face stickers on it
once you gain freedom, you can never stop guarding it.

I think Buenaventura Durruti is a pretty cool guy. eh kills fascists and doesnt afraid of ruins.
The quickest way to kill a revolution is to wait for it.

I learned distrust for authority figures and to question rules. Most rules are put in place not for the benefit of those who are subject to them, but for those who impose them.
