RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.
-SoulRiser

Saved. Anytime I mention homeschooling/unschooling I get baseless myths as an argument against it. I always try to tell them it isn't true, now I have a easy to read picture with sources.

Maybe that's why it's called 'average'? I dunno, that does look a bit odd to me too.

Gee...Soul, I've been looking everywhere for disadvantages to homeschooling my kids when I'm older...yeh, I'm so desperate I've been looking here too. YOU ARE NOT HELPING.
If I seem rude to you, please call me on it gently.

Homeschooling takes time and money. Public schooling, if you play your cards right, takes neither. It just so happens that homeschooling is far superior to public schooling, but you can always argue that you don't have enough time or money to homeschool your kids.

Wrong. In England, you're expected to 1)transport your spawn to school (gas money) and 2)Help them with homework (time).
I'd rather just do it myself to start with.

Do what the bad parents do - tell your kids to take a bus (and, if that's not possible, tell them to walk) and ignore everything they have to say about what they think of school and never offer to do their homework. There, no investment.
...You might disagree. But, hey. It's what my parents do here in America.

And then get prosecuted when my teenager decides that they can skip since no-one's watching them? And deal with endless letters from the school, culminating in 'we are teh king. Non-involvement is child negelect haw-haw'?
Yeh....all that does is delay the gas cost.

That doesn't seem to bother my parents. Just be the one to "prosecute" your kids if they don't like school or try to get away from it.

Hmmm...there is grounding, I suppose. Legally though, the parent is the one prosecuted while the child must attend school, even if they're stronger than you, despite the fact that technically, a 10-year-old can get arrested!

Why do you want a list of disadvantages?
One I can think of... normal homeschooling is basically school done at home, so it's all the same crap really. Unschooling is better, I think. Also, less time and money required for that. Or maybe more time. Totally depends on if your kids want your help with stuff or not.
You can say 'no', of course. But just get someone else to help them with it then.

Aaah. Well, you'd probably have to wander around pro-school sites for that sort of thing. Actually, the #1 argument against homeschooling is usually something about socialization. You could try Googling that for a whole bunch of opinions and whatnot.

Pretty much. Homeschooling is simply far too superior to public schooling to so much as be comparable.
