RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Teacher Personalities

Alright so I feel more clearheaded than last night lol. I just wanna ask a question:

Anyone else ever noticed that history teachers seem to be the most boring and strict, while science teachers are more laid back and fun? There are exceptions but often this is how it seems to be.

The other two main subjects are pretty much always one or the other at my district, so I won't focus on that.

RE: Teacher Personalities

My 9th grade history teacher Mr.Morris was actually a pretty cool guy, he was fun, had a good sense of humor and a kind disposition. My science teachers, were fun too. 9th grade was a pretty okay time, all my teachers were likable and none had a stuck up nature. It was the students I had trouble with.

RE: Teacher Personalities

Hah, this would be an interesting question to do a full-fledged research study on.

I can think of one history teacher I had that fit the strict quality. I dropped out a few days after his class started, though. I can't recall any science teachers being "fun." One might have roughly met your pattern, though one of my only currently recallable memories from that class was him getting very angry, and the class itself was boring, like high school in general.

On a somewhat tangential note, I do not understand why teachers are assigned to teach single subjects. I can't learn like that, and I could never teach like that. This is one aspect of factory-model education that desperately needs to change.

Meh I've never had that problem in my limited history with history teachers. However I have had strict science teachers.

Pretty Much my only signature...I'm mainly a lurker....you can find me on the IRC (or on DnE and their IRC).

RE: Teacher Personalities

My history teachers have been more laidback and fun in the past while my science teachers have varied over the years. Actually, I don't have any strict teachers right now. The strict teachers tend to be teaching English.

My history teacher was conservative but entertaining and engaging, my science teacher was fun, but kinda dull, though he was pretty smart.

For me it's completely backwards. All my science teachers have been bitchy and strict, while the history teachers were always easy going & fun.

Wow is this backwards, my History teacher is actually a really fun guy. My science teacher though...... just horrible. She never teaches, but she can hand out tons of worksheets. Because we all know that we learn from doing excessive work, not actually being taught.

My history teacher's actually pretty cool. One day after a test we had lots of free time left over so she let us decide on a movie to watch and played it on Netflix. :3 My science teacher is "meh" though.
