RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Something that happened at lunch yesterday...

So anyways, lunch was over, and one of the teachers saw an empty milk carton on the table. The following conversation takes place:

Teacher: Pick up that milk carton on that table over there and throw it away.
Me: But it's not mine.
Teacher: Yes it is; I saw you drink it!
Me: But it's not mine; I already threw mine away!
Teacher: NO, IT'S YOURS! PICK IT UP AND THROW IT AWAY!
Me: No, I'm not doing other peoples' work.
Teacher: LISTEN TO ME. WHEN I TELL YOU TO DO SOMETHING, YOU SAY 'YES MA'AM' AND DO WHAT I TELL YOU TO. YOU DON'T GIVE ME ANY LIP OR TALK BACK. NOW THROW IT AWAY!

Wow. What the fuck.

Or you could have just thrown it away... Oh noes, a milk carton!?!

Seriously, you complain about a single milk carton? Have you ever cleaned the ENTIRE cafeteria just because a certain lunch supervisor didn't approve of a little game of musical chairs? Now THAT sucked.

Whenever teachers do this, all I can think in my head is:

"Why the hell should he have to clean it up? Isn't that what janitors are paid to do? And maybe if they don't want us messing up the cafeteria, they shouldn't force us to be in it."

What the??? That is stupid. The girl was not responsable for other peoples messes. And while it may have been helpful of her to throw it out, the teacher didn't have a right to explode at her like that. It wasn't even hers in the first place. It's like they enjoying the fact they have power over us.

She had no right to freak out like she did. In the end, I would have thrown it away, but then calmly explained to her why I shouldn't have been forced to, in a very respectful manner, and watch her at her loss of words.

That is really the best thing that you should do in those type of situations. Since you are respectful about it, they pretty much have to be respectful right back at you, and if you have a good point in your disagreement, they have no option otter than to give in and accept that they are wrong, or sound like a complete idiot. Either way, you win.

I was forced to. If I didn't, I would've been suspended for having "discipline problems".

You should now explain to her why you SHOULDN'T have been forced to.

Wow, SUSPENDED for not picking up an empty bottle that isn't even yours? Reminds me on how I am in a minimal amount of trouble for taking a straw and not having mlk. Laugh
