RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

THANK YOU FOR TYPING IN ALL CAPITALS.

If the school rules say you don't need a cellphone, don't carry one. Parents have a way of getting in contact with the school. It's not neccesary.

you were suspended for that?! kids in my class call each other all the time during class to get the other person in trouble, and the most the teachers done was take it away until the end of class.

DD, cellphones aren't the point. schools have no right to silence communication. it's just like those damn computer censors. the free flow of information is not theirs to control, and shellular has every right to be pissed.

I think Buenaventura Durruti is a pretty cool guy. eh kills fascists and doesnt afraid of ruins.

Wrong.
Computers are their property. They bought them, they own them.
Just like I can censor stuff on my Pc, so can they.

Also, they have other methods of communication.

but they don't own the information being sent on it (or the cellphones). and also, you're not coercing people into using your pc. they are. if they're going to censor their computers, they should allow cell phones or pdas, something so that kids can have acess to uncensored info.

They bought the computers. They own it, and it's internet connection. They don't force you to use the internet either. You have to sign a legal contract to use it.

Besides, Censorship isn't always bad.

Glady:
1. Sheltering kids from Pornography.
2. Preventing Child Pornography.
3. Preventing Snuff Films.
The list goes on.

Anyway. They can't force you to sign the contract. You can opt out of the class.

censoring it won't stop it from happening, they'll just find other ways of distributing it. and yes, child porn is sick. but kids have a right to see regular porn just the smae as everyone else. it's gross, but it's wrong to shelter kids from the world's bad things.

Not really. We're stopping censorship right now. And what do you see? Record rates of depression.

if you'd rather be happy with lies than unhappy with the truth then go join the matrix.

You must have misread the matrix. The matrix was meant as a control program. It was never meant to be a happy place.

no, remember when cypher says "ignorance is bliss"? do you really want to live like that? personally, i'd rather see the world for what it really is and feel however i will as a result instead of live in a stupid, happy, fake world of lies and censorship.

everyone's ignorant in a way, we can never know everything. but i hate not knowing what's going on, so i'd rather try to learn as much as possible.

not at all. whether a person wants to live in blissful ignorance or ugly truth is a personal choice. personally, i choose option two. but others may have different opinions, and the school shouldn't try to make that decision for them.

I'm just going to toss my two cents in on the censorship software schools use. First off I would like to say our filters block out everything but pornography (including but not limited to anarchy, anarchist, anarchism, earth liberation front, communism, communist, socialism, socialist, this site before you moved, bbs, etc. and not hot ass). Anyhow the shear fact that they block sites of a political nature is enough to make it, in my opinion a form of oppression (mind you not a physical form of oppression but oppression nonetheless) also once again it is a requirement (after all they make us do Internet worksheets in English [learned a lot about reading and writing there])

i dont think it is too bad of a rule to not allow cell phones on campus, but suspendidng kids for having them? thats a bit extreme if you ask me...

also, about the computer censoring: i have no problem with them censoring things like porn and stuff, but blocking anything else i would consider blocking out education. all groups, no matter how extreme or violent (ELF), have a right to express themselves, especially on the internet.l

go to the websense site. they have the list of categories that they cna ban, including stuff like "anti government material", pro life/choice sites, "advocacy groups" and many more. this should give you an idea what their goal is here. NOTHING should be blocked, we are people and we have a right to read and see what we want.

I got suspended yesterday

You're lucky it was out of prison suspension. I was suspended for self defense once and enjoyed the free vacation and freedom.

school is about as fruitful as a dead apple tree.

I got suspended yesterday

I'd have said yes back in the day.

Today, I see little kids running around with Iphones and I'm not going to go so far as to say I'd trust them to not be distracted by their fancy electronic devices with millions of possible apps as well as "everywhere anytime" internet connection.

And lots of youth(and equally adults) have some sick obsession with texting EVERY SINGLE FUCKING MINUTE. Put that shit down you bastards and socialize like goddamn human beings.

Phones can give you information, school not. Can't have people actually learn things.

Nope. Phones are for social media and texting and selfies for the most part.
