RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

School sucks. Almost everyone hates it or semi-hates it. Yet these clueless teacher walk around screaming for us to just deal with it. They know that most people don't like school, but 2/3rds of them don't make a real attempt to make it better. No not giving homework for a week doesn't make school good. It makes it about 5% better, and only for a week. We still have to do classwork, projects, deal with stupid teachers who won't help you or teach and only care about grades that you get by doing work. I have like at least three teachers that don't hardly give an effort to teach. The tell everyone to go home and read something we haven't even learned yet out of a book and then answer questions. I thought you were a teacher not a babysitter or grader. You're supposed to teach. It just proves that we goto school not to learn, but to hammer in the nail the "teachers" put against our heads. And what do we get in return? More work. Sure we get a good grade, but that wouldn't even matter if school didn't exist.

Why don't you just try to make school not a sweatshop. All you do is busy work for seven hours (plus homework) and get zero pay. The work is so boring people fall asleep trying to do it. They blame it on us saying to goto bed earlier. I'm not tired, just this story about this girl visting her grandma is so boring that when they talked about going to bed I dozed off. Maybe you should pick more interesting stories or ask us what we want to read. No wait, teachers are too lazy, so they just send me away so they won't have to put in any effort to make school better. Oh yeah while we talk about laziness how about those politicians, won't they make school better? No, because changing the system takes too much effort. Their just going to leave it the way it is. Because adults tend to think that school is just fine and dandy. Since the people who are actually going through the system have no voice, and those people are typically viewed as "immature", yeah.

I always found it funny that students are considered incapable of rational decisions to the point that they ought to be forced to do things like attend school for their own good, but then blamed for not listening to teachers or not working hard enough. If they were truly incapable of making decisions, then it would be unreasonable to expect those things of them. The responsibility for students' learning would essentially fall to the teachers, and the system itself would only be successful to the degree that it ensured cooperation.

If people are going to believe stupid things they should at least be consistent.
