RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

School Problems

So I'm pretty pissed off today for stupid reasons.

I'll list what I hate about school as time goes on but for now I'll just post what made me so irritable today.

So at my school we have this off period called DEAR (drop everything and read), anyways I was doing my homework in DEAR when my teacher told me to close my textbook. I said why and my teacher answered DEAR is for reading only. Dear is 65 minutes long, 45 minutes are for reading and 25 are for homework. Naturally I was angry because everybody reads to some extent. Its as if school officials think when we get home we immediately start watching Game of Thrones or The Walking Dead. Have these fucktards called Administration ever given a survey to students? Many students have electronic media accessible to them. We use reading as a daily part of lives.

Its as if these people are trying to see how long we can work with little time constraints. All my fucking life I have been told to use my goddamn time efficiently and now you're restricting that from me? You can burn in hell School. I wake up for school at 6:30 AM and actually go to school at 7:45 AM. Then I leave for home at 3:45 PM but then I go home at 4:30 PM. 8 hours of school with 2 hours lost in transit time. It doesn't help that I go to sleep at 5:30 PM and wake up at 7:50 PM. The result of this being I get 5-6 hours of sleep + 2 hours in the afternoon makes me tired as hell. I sleep at 11:00 bitchin PM and am inefficient at working.

I would have made this more organized, but I really have to do my homework which sucks ass. Post anything that could possibly make me help from my hellhole of a time constraint please!

in elementary school we had this thing called 100 book challenge
basically you had to read for a certain amount of time and mark it down on your sheet and get a parent/teacher to sign it
every 100 books you would get a medal
also, there were different colors for different reading levels. i was never allowed past white, which was around a 3rd or 4th grade reading level i think until the end of 4th grade when i was allowed to go one above white, but the teacher refused to test me

i avoided reading books in my free time for a good 3 years afterwards

I wonder what would happen if you did a survey... you could share it here. Do you know what others in your school think about all this?

Those time constraints sounds pretty difficult to deal with. :(

If you had control over your own schedule and ways of learning, do you think you could do a better job with learning than what they set up for you?

(Assuming it's a yes... but if you have any ideas on what you'd do, I'm interested in hearing about it. Maybe you could somehow get them to change, or publicize how ridiculous it is to refuse to.)

RE: School Problems

I know that feeling, other than the DEAR thing; we're lucky to get any reading opportunities at school and probably teachers wouldn't approve of what I read—hacking books. I go to school 8:20 AM-9:00 PM every day—my thread on my life describes the whole thing. I get stressed and it sucks.

"If you wanna know how not secure you are, just take a look around. Nothing's secure. Nothing's safe. I don't hate technology, I don't hate hackers, because that's just what comes with it, without those hackers we wouldn't solve the problems we need to solve, especially security."

I'm sure my school won't approve of my George Orwell/Max Brooks/Tom Clancy books, if they read over my shoulder

We have a similar thing called SSR (Sustained Silent Reading.) I feel that it's plain stupid if the ONLY thing we are allowed to do in our free time is read.

And yes, reading levels are stupid. I have a high reading level (doesn't mean shit, I'm a dumbass) but I'm a slow reader, and they won't let me read bellow the level, so my choices are mostly limited to either 800 page fiction books that I can't finish in three months, or 81 page books that I can finish in two days. Since I have AR, both are bad choices because both will lead to me not getting enough points to get a good grade (and I do NOT want that teacher visiting my house to let my parents know I didn't reach my goal.)

RE: School Problems

AR/RC is just stupid. If it was to encourage kids to read, the only thing it encouraged is to wait until the day before the points were due then just read a bunch of 1 point books.

Not if you aren't a fast reader, your school uses the point system, or your school requires a password that only teachers know to take a test.

School Problems

I hated those sorts of classes.

I had proven a million times over that my reading skills were superb, and that I considered reading a legitimate hobby. Despite all this however, I got lots of BS from teachers who supported this crap who said "If you like reading so much, this should be a breeze!".

I like eating too, but that doesn't mean I'd enjoy eating shit. So why am I reading shit?
