RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

School Uniform..?

Hello, all. I'm new by the way, so you probably haven't seen much of me.

So, I was wondering why teachers are so strict on school uniform. In my school, we have a strict uniform code: no hair dyeing, shirts tucked in, ties seven stripes or longer, etc.

But why? Is this another way for the world to mold us into robots? Or is it so that the school will look good from society's point of view? Surely, the sole purpose of a school should be to give children an education, not pointers on how to look smart.

It's just stupid. It's not like having an untucked shirt will make your IQ drop 50 points, or make you do worse on a test. A uniform's purpose is exactly what the name implies: a tool to make everybody look, and eventually act, the same, in the school system's ideal model.

Do any of you guys wear uniform? How strict is it?

Oh, by the way, sorry if there's already a thread like this somewhere. Smile

It's funny, that. They say that uniform helps us all identify as one school and be unified. They also say it prevents bullying and things like that, and that's fine.
What I don't get is why at my school they parade around looking for bracelets, socks with any kind of colour on it or sneakers and give us yard duty or even suspension. It's not like my wearing socks with a pink stripe at the top is going to distract myself, or anyone else for that matter, from learning.
I think they are focussing on things that make the school look good, but deep down it's just oppression and it's meaningless compared to the students' happiness and education.

RE: School Uniform..?

We have a achool uniform but after the first 2-3 months the school relaxes on enforcement. Else the entire school might be suspended. We usually follow the dress code but take some liberties like not tucking in, wearing cloth of similar color shade and etc.

School Uniform..?

School systems all over the globe make me feel sick. I'm the teachers favourite target when it comes to breaching the uniform rules. They are like a bunch of rats around a piece of food that looks a lot more yummy than all of the bland grains of rice which are found everywhere (I'm hungry and the teachers are rats). It's pretty sickening. They state these uniform rules in PSHE classes.

They come up with good and bad aspects of having a uniform and nearly every time the good aspects outweigh the bad. The class seem to be 99 percent brainwashed because they agree without question. The school is shit they work so hard to make sure every child is a high achieving individual when theyre a bunch of lying scum. They just want us to obey and be the same as everyone else.

The most shittiest and classic excuse that the teachers use to persuade us to wear uniform is
"If there was no uniform you would be bullied because you might have different clothes to everyone else" Something along the lines of that... sick.

I teeter on the edge. I honestly see no benefit of either side. One side you're forced to wear what they make you wear without really getting some input from the one's wearing it(what is the point of asking parents if it's the students wearing it). On the other, you've got students stupidly following along with their own cliques and wear cloth not because they like it but because others want them to wear it. I find it illogical to give clothing any meaning or distinction because it's nothing but colored fabrics(whether natural or man-made variants).

This is for high school that is. Yes, I disagree with those who degrade teens but I do agree that many of the things they say about them are not far off. I see the uniform/no-uniform dilemma more a choice between the lesser of two evils. Either the authoritarian rule of the administration or the absurd mob rule of the students.

They want you to be the same. Individuality is prohibited. They think everyone is going to be wearing a suit and tie when they are older? no, they are mostly likely to be wearing a T-shirt that promotes the brand they are working for. The other people in my school that breach uniform policy are begging for freedom and individuality... they slowly kill out our inner child throughout the 12 years.

But doesn't the mob want the same? Don't they want you to dress like them, act like them? What is individuality if it's simply replaced with a more decentralized prohibition. I know kids in my school who breach the uniform policy but it isn't for freedom or individuality, it's for show. Everyone would be speaking of their A&F hoodies and Hollister shirts. I don't give a fuck about how cool the shirts in the store looked, or how your shoes are the latest in fashion.

It's my opinion that there is something that needs to be fixed, as this uniform/dress issue is only a symptom of a bigger illness that plagues society. How is it freedom when there is "peer pressure" to conform to their style. If you don't wear brand name shit, you're considered a outlier. That isn't freedom and individuality, that's chaotic anarchy. We replace a SINGLE brutal police state with MULTIPLE gangs that believe if you aren't with them, you're against them.

(Probably why I felt like bashing people's heads in when they start talking about fashion, or better yet, act like they know fashion. Copying what's said in magazines, TVs and by other friends who get it from magazines and TV is verbal plagiarism, not knowledge)
