RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.
-SoulRiser

In America they have a whole army devoted to making sure kids go to school
But there's no army, no one in the government that gives a shit, about the homeless and dying kids in America.

In Bulgaria we have one guard at the entrance of the school. The school calls your parents only if you're absent for more THAN A MONTH and you can leave whenever you want.

In my old school we had two "security guards"
One was an older man who was kinda cool and the other was this bitchy lady who didn't really accomplish anything.

Pretty much the same here. We have a hall narc but it's pretty easy to leave. I've done it.

We had no cops in my high school (it was a prestigious private school though so I guess that's why) but even the public highschool in my area had no cops. However a high school I worked in a couple years ago had guards and cops.

RE: Truancy police
We don't have guards at our school (probably why there are so many druggies) but after 10-18 days of missed school (excused or unexcused) our school threatens us with court and postponing/losing your driver's lisence 6 months for every day you miss school after you go to court.
I'm pretty sure any judge will be biased toward school. There's not a chance that judge will be absolutely neutral. Lies, I tell you, lies.

RE: Truancy police
At my school we have several officers for the purposes of breaking up fights and preventing truancy. If you're out in the halls during classtime then they may or may not stop you, depending on whether or not you are a suspicious looking character. If you are one of the kids who can be stereotyped as harmless with straight A's based on your appearance, like myself, then you're good to go.
We're not allowed to leave school during the middle of the day without a parent coming to pick us up, and if you skip ten consecutive school days then you may loose your license. So tell me what separates school from going to jail for seven hours a day?
Who am I? Who are YOU?

We have two guards at my school. They help keep order during the morning hours, lunch and dismissal. They tend to stay on the first floor until one of the staff calls for them.

RE: Truancy police
There are often times lots of police officers at school. They usually go outside school and arrest anyone who looks like they are under the age of 18 and bring them back to school and then give them a fine. I can't wait until I'm 18, I'll go somewhere for lunch everyday, since it's the only meal I eat now.

lol at my school they won't even let you leave if you're eighteen. You need to have damn good reason to leave during the day, and they'll never let you go out for lunch. There isn't enough time anyway. There's another school in my county whose lunch periods last for an hour, so they can leave without it being an issue. I'm envious of them.

RE: Truancy police
We used to have a couple of cops, but I guess the cops were charging for some reason... It was too expensive and I guess the cops were getting tired of babysitting, so they hired a "professional security agency" to sit outside and monitor the students and shit. That, plus we have 2 "live in" guards who break up fights and are certified to manage the students in ISS and shit. It's fairly easy to sneak out, and the hired security guys don't have permission to chase anyone down once we get out on the road, so they don't... I've been able to sneak out on more than one occasion.
My school gets mad when I leave now that I'm eighteen, but legally they can't do much so I do it anyway...

We've got one guard who's time is generally wasted and thus so is our tax money because nothing ever happens at my school anyway.
We've also got an unseen truancy force that apparently exists and forces kids to come to school.

RE: Truancy police
At my school there's usually only on SRO there at all times, when they bring the dogs to search lockers though they bring like a fucking FLEET of cops to help, but they just stand around mostly anyways haha.
Mostly the cops just there to intimidate, and to stop people from going across the street to go smoke weed at the church or park. You can ditch all you want at my school though, if anyone questions you (which RARELY happens) you just say you have an off period and they wont question you any more that that. they just call your parent if you didn't come to class, but you can just say you were really late to class (10 mins late=counted absent).
My school's really relaxed though, it consists mainly of stoners, scene kids, "Tha hard ass G'Z", the real "G's", and preps. Everyone gets along fine, and when there is a problem, it usually just works itself out so there's no need for an SRO.
Well that was long as fuck, but I'm high as fuck so I dont care.

RE: Truancy police
When I was in high school in the 90s (yeah, I know), all we had were hall narks who patrolled the halls and grounds around the school, looking for truants and smokers. I thought it was like prison, but when I read about schools having armed cops in them nowadays, I realize how free we actually were.
