RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

I got voted as most "studious" in my school?

Being in hick town, reading a book here makes you look like Einstein. That said, I get disgusted looks all the time "You READ???? WHY? HAHAHA SMARTPHONE APPS!!" Cuckoo anyone else get this?

I'm not popular. At least not in a good way, and today on "who's who" which is basically an American popularity contest, I got voted most "studious". I guess being silent, socially awkward, and read a couple of books (I'm kidding, books are my crack) and you get that title. Woo hoo. Pirate RolleyesSarcasticclap

RE: I got voted as most "studious" in my school?

I was voted "most likely to succeed" in middle school. The kind of success I have in mind is not the kind of success they have in mind.

Hello, traveler.

This is an ancient account I have not used in a long time. My views have changed much in the intervening months and years.

Nonetheless, I refuse to clean it up. Pretending that I've held my current views since the beginning of time is what we in the industry call a lie. Asking people to do so contributes to moralistic self-loathing. "See, those people have nothing damning! I do! I'm truly vile!"

Because you can never be a good person with a single blemish on the moral record, I thought that simply entertaining some thoughts made me irredeemable. Though I don't care for his writing style, William Faulkner presents a good counterexample. He went from being a typical Southern racist to supporting the civil rights movement. These days we'd yell at him for that, probably.

People are allowed to change their views.

Nevertheless, this period of my life has informed some of how I am today. In good ways and bad ways. To purge it would be to do a disservice to history. Perhaps it will not make anyone sympathetic, but it may help someone understand.

If, after reading all this, you still decide to use the post above as evidence that I am evil today, ask yourself if you have never disagreed with the moral code you now follow. In all likelihood you did, at some point. If some questions are verboten, and the answer is "how dare you ask that," don't expect your ideological opponents to ever change their minds.

Yeah, it's pretty subjective. You might be dirt broke, and working as a garbage man, but you're happy! That's success in my opinion. Fu

Being affluent enough to live decently is a big boost to happiness.

I never got any votes, but I won second place in a school geography bee sponsored by NatGeo around 2007. I got a badge and my mother gave me 100 dollars that she promptly took back so she could buy me books I wanted. At least I appreciate books. (That or winter clothing, which I also appreciate.)

First place would have meant me going to the state competition, which I don't think I was prepared for. I still felt bad about it though, because this was when I was feeling fairly depressed.

I got voted as most "studious" in my school?

I've gotten honor rolls, high honor rolls, student of the month(more than once), most studious, most likely to succeed, second best smile, considered a living encyclopedia(Dune readers can think "mentat"), have some other awards from science Olympiads, robotic competitions, AP distinguished award(forget exact name).

I felt more enthusiastic getting all 100 hidden packages in GTA 3. Biggrin

I got voted as most "studious" in my school?

I got honor roll in 5th and 6th grades pretty consistently. My 7th grade Lexile scores were also, according to my mother, at a level normally reserved for high school graduates (and it was a dip from my 6th grade score). I didn't care then, and while I find the circumstances interesting now I'm not too pressed about my Lexile score these days either. Most of my reading is on the internet now, anyway.

I got voted as most "studious" in my school?

My peers thought I was going places back in 5th grade. Of all those places, I don't think my graduation will be one of them :(

I would like to have books. Unfortunately, I don't think a conversation with my parents about buying books on Marxism or anarchism would end well, so I just get free PDFs of books on my phone or PC.

What do you read about?

I got voted as most "studious" in my school?

I usually win a ship ton of awards at school and really I could care less. It just tells me the teachers think I'm a better person than I am. This is me talking by the way I often use a nicer alter ego for comedic purposes, but really that's just who people think I am. I still have shelves full of books, but I've grown tired of reading them.

Have your regrets, but always stay strong from yours truly, Illuzion.

Are your parents mine?? I had to sneak a couple of those from the library. And gay fiction books too. My dad's not a major capitalist or anything, but he's pretty Conservative. Mom hates equality.

And what I read is lately social science books like social norms on boys and girls, college, etc.
Young adult and tech magazines.

I think I've gotten similar awards too. Awards I now consider mostly meaningless.
