RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.
-SoulRiser

Hypocrisy Thread (Formerly MLP Argument (Formerly This is how schools solve bullying)
(Source: http://www.equestriadaily.com/2014/03/ki...#idc-cover )
A kid was bullied for being a brony. The school solves it by not letting him bring his Rainbow Dash backpack! I mean really! That's punishing the victim, not getting rid of the bullying problem! He's still a brony, so he'll still get bullied. The bullies already know it. Nothing will be different except THE VICTIM'S first amendment rights are violated.
P.S.: Please don't insert your opinions about MLP, this is not about bronyism, this is about first amendment rights.

This is how schools solve bullying.
Schools blame the victim. So do prisons. Ancient Colosseums. Any slave structure, and that's how it is.

That's what you get for being a brony. They did him a favor, perhaps now he will reconsider his obsession with cartoon ponies.

If I were him I'd sue the school district for:
Failing to provide a safe environment
Restricting my first amendment rights.
Pretty Much my only signature...I'm mainly a lurker....you can find me on the IRC (or on DnE and their IRC).

Technically, we aren't "guaranteed our rights as minors". Yet we are supposed to technically own the government. The sweet taste of irony.

RE: This is how schools solve bullying.
Sharpie's just messing around. It wasn't that bad.
You know it's not really as bad at it seems when Night of all people defends someone.
Anyways, stupid school. Victim blaming at its finest. This doesn't solve bullying at all. In fact, it perpetuates it.
Yes, lets make the victim stop using his backpack that'll teach those bullies! No no, it only shows them they "hey, if we make fun of someone, they're the ones that get stuff taken from them!!"
Jesus fucking christ, did they even call these bullies' parents?
Oh an another thing on this poor kid. Way to go school, you are now the bully!! You have taken the side of the bullies in making this kid stop using his fucking backpack! You are now showing this kid that he's not normal. That what he likes is to be hidden away. A secret. Something to be ashamed. Great job, no really, I commend you on making the situation worse.
Oh my god.
What's the principal's email address? I'm contacting him.
edit: idk how to find the principals email, but i did write a post on the facebook page. Hopefully the school officals are reading. Or someone can relay the message.

Does it only apply in certain situations or something? I'm confused.
What do you honestly expect schools to do, hover over every suspected bully and make sure they don't hurt your feelings? If you're being bullied then stick up for yourself and take care of business, you can't seriously expect your school to do a damn thing about it.

RE: This is how schools solve bullying.
Potato, if you please...
GET! OFF! MY! PLANET!
Hello, traveler.
This is an ancient account I have not used in a long time. My views have changed much in the intervening months and years.
Nonetheless, I refuse to clean it up. Pretending that I've held my current views since the beginning of time is what we in the industry call a lie. Asking people to do so contributes to moralistic self-loathing. "See, those people have nothing damning! I do! I'm truly vile!"
Because you can never be a good person with a single blemish on the moral record, I thought that simply entertaining some thoughts made me irredeemable. Though I don't care for his writing style, William Faulkner presents a good counterexample. He went from being a typical Southern racist to supporting the civil rights movement. These days we'd yell at him for that, probably.
People are allowed to change their views.
Nevertheless, this period of my life has informed some of how I am today. In good ways and bad ways. To purge it would be to do a disservice to history. Perhaps it will not make anyone sympathetic, but it may help someone understand.
If, after reading all this, you still decide to use the post above as evidence that I am evil today, ask yourself if you have never disagreed with the moral code you now follow. In all likelihood you did, at some point. If some questions are verboten, and the answer is "how dare you ask that," don't expect your ideological opponents to ever change their minds.

RE: This is how schools solve bullying.
Liking something weird or different is one thing. Flaunting it obnoxiously is another. Whether this is true for this particular case or not, bronies have a terrible reputation of being obnoxious and flaunting their pony love everywhere to the point where it annoys the shit out of everyone. This is why bronies are the most hated fandom on the internet and an easy target for everyone. Not saying the school was right in their decision, but he probably shouldn't have chose to wear that backpack if he couldn't stand up for himself.
Sharpie makes an interesting point here too. You guys are whining about free speech after you said yourselves free speech is bad whenever I mention it. Free speech includes hate speech. And yes sure, you may be safe here in SS, but it doesn't apply in real life. If you have a controversial opinion about something, you HAVE to defend it. A problem with public school is when we get bullied, we are taught to defer to authority and as you guys are learning now authority doesn't do shit. This whole forum has the same mentality despite being a supposed anti-school forum. Stop whining about it and KICK HIS ASS! It's better to be feared than respected, or even better... fear=respect. And if you get suspended, wear that as a badge of honor.

How'd this turn to a brony debate?
How about the school just punish the bullies? Then again, people really could develop tolerance and really stop bullying people over things like a fucking backpack. Jeez, fuck factory model schooling and the mob mentality.

This is how schools solve bullying.
A school can do nothing to truly punish a bully. What are they going to do, suspend them? Give them a detention? None of that convinces a bully to stop or rethink their actions.

Gore, with absolutely no respect at all, you are an idiot. Bronies do not shove their interests in people's faces. All they do is wear things that show other people "Hey, I like this." If you want that to mean "flaunting obnoxiously," then how about people that wear Doctor Who shirts? Are they being obnoxious? What about people who wear Aeropostale? Are they being obnoxious? What about people that only drive Chevy trucks? Are they being obnoxious by driving a vehicle that they like? People like you are the reason people get bullied, you are the kind of person that would start a rumour about someone and not be afraid of them finding out because you can "defend yourself" and then you get all pissy when someone posts about it on the internet.

This is how schools solve bullying.
this is why minors should have all the legal rights and responsibilities of adults, these cases should be resolved according to harassment and bullying laws. the other problem is that the victim doesn't think he has an option to avoid the bullies while he probably does. he probably hasn't looked into virtual schools or homeschooling or dropping out.

So your solution to stop bullying is to only allow bullies to go to an actual school building and make all the others be socially challenged due to not being around any other human beings they aren't related to? Or will we have special schools for bullies and non bullies?

^no, read the first sentence. my solution is to either find a way to isolate the bullies from the victims- put out some restraining orders or place them apart in the school, and if that fails, put the bullies in jail for harassment.

So what you want to do, essentially, is harm the social development of lots of people by isolating them from others? By putting the bullies in juvy, which you can't do for harassment, you're basically making it so that the "nerds" can fight over who gets to get a drink at a water fountain first, and thus they start bullying eachother. Before you know it, the schools will be empty and the juvies will be full.
I don't think you thought this out too well.
The less you try to control things, the less you need to.

Thanks for the diploma… can I have my childhood back?
I’d love to have a battle of wits with you… but I hate to fight the unarmed.

they won't be bullying each other if there were severe penalties for it, that's the whole point. and jail-time is probably is the best penalty for that purpose, unless if you have something better
