RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Is it ethically right to make yourself better with drugs?
As the title says: Do you think it is ethicly O.K to use drugs so you can get better results? Drugs, as resembled by Ritalin or Modafinil. So basicly: Is neuroenchanting ok?
I know people who use Ritalin so they can learn better. Do you think that is a correct thing to do?

Updated for understanding. The Process of using stuff that makes your brain work faster or more efficient is called "Neuro-Enchanting".

I would rather not mess around with the brain unless it's absolutely necessary like if you need medication for a serious illness. I was considering using some adderal for a performance boost but I would rather not become dependent on it.

RE: Is it writ to make yourself better with drugs?
In all circumstances using drugs regularly for long term treatment is ineffective and unnecessary. Given that you have to take them long term exemplifies how they do not work.
95% of every kid diagnosed with "ADD" just does not get enough sleep or proper nutrition
Lack of sleep and nutrition is NOT a justifiable reason EVER under ANY CIRCUMSTANCE to take "focus pills". Rather, you just need to take care of yourself more

RE: Is it ethically right to make yourself better with drugs?
The title was bugging me, so I edited it. Hope you don't mind.
I wouldn't use any drugs at all unless absolutely necessary. I have no ethical issues with it if you're doing it out of your own free will, then it's fine I suppose, but it should never be forced on anyone.

RE: Is it ethically right to make yourself better with drugs?
Ah, I think you mean nootropics. Check 'em out on wikipedia.
Ethics: Why would it be ethically bad? It's not hurting anyone else, and it may actually help you out.
So should you use them? If you find that they help you, go for it, just as long as you don't become dependent on them. I've used amphetamines on multiple different occasions, and I've never had a problem with addiction, so no I don't think it's a problem. The thing is, I'd recommend trying other nootropics before going to amphetamines like ritilin and adderall.
Go with something in the Racetam family. Piracetam is the shit. Absolutely no down-sides. Seriously, it's not addictive, and massive dosages haven't shown any adverse symptoms in patients. Long term studies haven't been conducted on them, so be careful, but as far as we know, they are prefectly safe. Millions of people have used 'em, and nobody has reported any problems.
Look into it.

RE: Is it ethically right to make yourself better with drugs?
Well, the argument I heared the most was it would be unfair against others. They wouldn't have that kind of "support".
But honestly, thanks for the information.

Most drugs make you better temporarily, but will have bad side-effects. If there are any drugs that make you physically or mentally better than normal that don't have side effects then go for it.

RE: Is it ethically right to make yourself better with drugs?
Nobody has brought up the unfair advantage argument. I am all for it as long as the person participating understands that as with all drug use, side affects and dependency may occur. However, I hear a lot of people argue that it gives the students that are willing to risk the balance of their body chemistry for grades an unfair advantage over kids that go with out (The "fair" way).

RE: Is it ethically right to make yourself better with drugs?
Basically what I meant. I know that, at some point, I will tweak my body a bit. But only when the known side-effects are not to drastic. Which is a pretty though choice for somebody who never even smoked weed before, or used any other drug (despite caffeine and alcohol - two things, I advise you, NOT to mix).

RE: Is it ethically right to make yourself better with drugs?
Yeah, as for the whole "unfair advantage" thing, I think it's a load of crap. The only people who think of school as a competition are the soccer mom/helicopter parents who have kids with 4.0 GPA's and a stupid bumper sticker on their car saying "My son is an honor student." School was never intended to be, nor should it ever turn into a competition. It's an education, not a race. If you want to improve yourself through non-natural means, more power to you...
As for sports and the like, I don't care one way or the other. I wouldn't use steroids though. That'd fucking suck.

RE: Is it ethically right to make yourself better with drugs?
I don't see anything wrong with the concept, but every drug has it's own pro's and con's, a lot of them actually are just plain bad for you...
That said, if they really do make your life better then they might be worth it to you despite their downsides.

Hey that's interesting...I'm tempted to break my rule and import it. Apparently I need a prescription but sometimes customs doesn't care...really tempted to risk it and order it online.
PS I'm going to take it but "cycle" it, as bodybuilders do with their drugs/supplements.

Grades are not worth unstable body chemistry. If you really want to "cheat" to get better grades, cheat the old-fashioned way.

Better question. "Is it ethically wrong to use enhancement drugs"
Because it's definitely not ethically right to take them, not taking them is fine. It might be ethically wrong though, depending on who you ask.
