RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

TDF, please fucking maybe give me money for attending one of those schools before mentioning them. Apparently they cost few hundred a month.

Problem, officer?

I hope you realize I included the word "usually".
If anyone is being forced to attend those democratic schools, I'm still against them. And also, democracy is evil, because it's tyranny of the majority.

I did.
Prince Rilian Wrote:If anyone is being forced to attend those democratic schools, I'm still against them.
Even though it's still terrible that students are being forced to go to school, it's nice to see that there are some places that give the students a say for once.
Prince Rilian Wrote:And also, democracy is evil, because it's tyranny of the majority.
So the teachers and staff holding all the cards is worse than the students actually having a say in what the school does? In some cases where the public is poorly educated and whatnot, democracy is a bad choice of system. In a school however, it'd be a welcome change, for me at least.

I'm well aware of that. I never said they were perfect. I can't think of anything that is.

Go think toward our future, with our own two hands MAKING OUR FUTURE, trying to make it something we can be proud of. Something we have dreamed of, OUR dream, our goal, our sanctuary.

TRIGGER WARNING: THIS TRIGGER WARNING CONTAINS TRIGGER WARNINGS!

Dear Tumblrites: Despite your wrongly self-diagnosed PTSD, no line of scientific evidence suggests people can be triggered over the internet. Triggering works through the senses (i.e. smell, taste, touch, vision, hearing.) but it goes through real time; if you're not experiencing it in real life as it's ACTUALLY HAPPENING in your ACTUAL life, you CANNOT be triggered. The only exception to this is if you have a seizure, but then again, that's triggered by epilepsy (i.e. rapidly-changing flashing lights) NOT PTSD. Remembering a bad incident is NOT the same thing as having a flashback. When you remember, you think; when you flashback, you feel.

That all depends on the person going through it. I personally agree with you on that one, but hey, this site is all about welcoming people who have different opinions.

Re: Don't forget

NowhereWoman, you don't realize the stupidity of your post. I can't believe you would come to this kind of conclusion. I, for one, will not stand for you making up this kind of stuff. School is serious business and I will not be told otherwise. What you don't seem to realize is that rebellion is the very foundation on what this country was built on. We are taught teamwork, sportsmanship, and balance through fighting the power. Without all of this, our society and humanity as we know it would fall.

I'm glad to be part of such a unique empire and I will fight to the death for it. It's in my spiritual being to come to the aid of those who need it. To be questioned is to be dishonored and you should know that by now. We are all insignificant in this universe, and if nothing matters that means that everything matters. An example of my understanding can be seen in the book "Go, Dog. Go!" When the dog hits the red light, he stops. This can be compared to many things in modern-day life, such as when you get your girlfriend pregnant because you forgot to wrap it, or when you decide your kid is too ugly to keep. Everything gets better, however, when you hit that green light, and it's smooth sailing ahead.

Some people do not make it to this green light and eventually take their own life. I am saying it is not the right thing to do; stick with what is hard and you will be rewarded in the end. No matter how hard life is or how bad your love life is, what you can do is all you can do, and that's all that matters from a realistic standpoint.

In any case, I agree, but if I had to respond, I'd just say that we can't let ourselves down a slippery slope of violence, anger, and self-righteousness. We always have to check ourselves lest we get the independence and power we feel we deserve and then abuse it.

But I don't even know if I'm responding to the right comment. O.o

And that goes for you pro-schoolers as well. Just because we have a different idea of learning doesn't mean we're "troubled" or we need "therapy", or anything. Give us a chance to try our way, to try having freedom in terms of education.

Also for us. When Killjoy came around, it was a good debate, but in my opinion, we were a bit too extreme. We talk about people not forcing opinions, yet we were a little forcing ourselves.

May seem like an elementary thread, but I just thought I'd remind us.

Re: Don't forget

I somewhat agree. However, I have yet to find a teacher that is AMAZING. Yes there is the possibility, yes their might be some great teachers out there. But I have yet to meet them. I can't compare my school to another because it's the only one I've been too. But, I criticize school at every chance I get. For the pain it causes me, I will ATTACK at EVERYTHING THEY DO WRONG. Call me a whiny little shit, but why should I listen to them (teachers, politicians etc. the "elite") when they don't listen to me?

I agree that we shouldn't blame EVERY teacher or be destructive and burn down schools etc. But I am just so damn angry. Every day I'm either depressed and sad, or ANGRY AS HELL. I'm a calm kid though in general, pretty laid back. If a teacher asks me to do something nicely, I'll do it. And I'll have my manners, and my bright smile, and be friendly. But when they overload with homework, or make me do something stupid, oh does my blood boil.

Bumping this thread because this post is true. Looking back I had some amazing teachers who saved me from mediocrity.

Doesn't excuse the rest of the crap in the system, but I still like this post.
