RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Hi everybody!

Hi,
I'm 16 and unschooled. I have a pinscher dog.
Three days from now, I pass the épreuves anticipées du baccalauréat en candidat libre as I live in France, and next year the baccalauréat. Baccalauréat is a bit like the SAT, or the A-level. I'm passing bac S (scientific section).

I stopped school in 2009, I think, because I was in depression, and I can say I was in depression because of school. Only since this year beginning I feel better, but I still have panic attacks when I'm tired or under a lot of stress.
I first took distance learning courses, but only a year because CNED course are shitty and I have no money.
I also stopped school because, in the beginning, I wanted to go do an apprentissage, which is a kind of quick formation. They didn't want to let me because I was "too smart for that", although my grades were average damn it, so I should have gone do a bac L (litterature section of high school, sort of), also because there was more girls in bac L. So, I got even worse grades, and they wanted to send me do a CAP Secrétariat, because there were a lot of girls in these classes, and as I was a girl then it'd be easy for me! Note: they also wanted to send me do L partly because I was a girl, and the only reason there is so much girls in CAP Secrétariat is because they send all the girls there and all the boys in BEP Bâtiment, or something like that. The teacher even took my pen and formular out of my hands to strike my first choice formation and write shit about me wanting to do bac L!!! Note, too, that at the time I wanted to do a fashion-related formation, isn't that what our culture think of as "for girls"? What the hell was their reasoning?

I'm interested in youth liberation, chiropteras, watching TV and movies, programming, physical computing, torture instruments (you can't have stupid hobbies) and fashion (DIYing clothes). I also like playing a game from time to time, online games (now really rarely), retrogaming, chess, or Zombie Flux and Gloom. I just found Game & Watch and a Multi-Game in a flea market but have no button battery that would fit.
Next month I'll go to Free Software Meeting for what it is worth.
I don't know how to end presentations, anyway I wish I had knew of a website similar to School Survival when I was still in school. Most of those I knew were for parents who made the choice to homeschool their kids, and one said to me it was a bad thing if it wasn't the parents' idea.

Re: Hi everybody!

I'm having my Bacalaureat exam (Romanian end-of-high-school tests) starting on the 27th. Heh.

Anyway, welcome to SS, I hope you enjoy it here =)

I've gone through a pretty huge stint of panic attacks myself, so I know where you're coming from. I really hope it'll get better for you soon.

What kind of programming language do you enjoy? PHP, C++, ...?

Let go of all desire for the common good, and the good becomes common as grass.

Re: Hi everybody!

Thanks! And good luck on your exams.
I know a bit of C, but I'm mainly programming in Ada. I'd like to learn ASM when I've more time and am more calm (not around exams).

UnschoolShqiponjë: yes, and I learnt about School Survival by a link you posted there! Thanks!
SoulRiser: I wonder why you made the choice to host it in France? Has it anything to do with legislation? (said I, trying to look smart)
I had the occasion to use some on a mannequin (real working strappado, breaking wheel and a rack; but they weren't from the era they were used, only reproductions.) during a fair, and to get stuck in a pillory. I'm translating words while writing that, strappado sounds more spanish. There was an animation with boot supplice, how the fuck is this plastic personnage healing himself, also a "show" of dismemberment, with another mannequin or more of a puppet, cords and plastic horses... That was a bit kitsch.
Last year I had the idea of making a sort-of electric chair using an old car battery. A "fake" one, enough to hurt but not kill or damage you too much. Well, I made some research and it seemed too complicated, plus even old car batteries are too expensive for me. I even had a consenting victim to test it, damn; don't know what I would have done had I killed him by mistake. So I dropped the idea for its dangerosity. Maybe he'll be okay for waterboarding if I ask, now that I think of it.
Uh, and I have no skill to make anything using wood. I need to work on that. On the other hand, it needs to be functional, not beautiful, but so does your car and why then do you own a Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost??? Laugh
What am I saying. I must say I'm really tired. (but I really think, seeing my lack of skills, it won't be too functional either.) (also, no money to buy materials.)

Nah it's because this bitch Carla Franklin tried to take down SS because of Signatures calling her a whore so Soul had to move the server really quickly.

Anyways, Nice to meet you.

Again, I agree with you. School does teach you things. And once again, you are missing the point entirely. It's not that I disagree with school's mission or the things it teaches. What I object to is that the students are deprived of any choice in the matter. As benign as the intentions may be, any system that forces people into an environment where they have no say in their lives is a situation ripe for abuse of power.
