RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

This isn't trying to control you...

It's normally a bad thing if you show somebody something without any reason of having gotten it.

But area? Perimeter? More often than not, showing your work isn't necessary. It's like showing someone exactly how you came to the conclusion that 2+2=4

No, they try to control your way of doing things. Even if it's more efficient.

Lies, if they told me to follow the instructions of a lab, instead of doing it how I want to, (my way would fuck it up), which way would be better.

I have had times where my way was better. Because unlike my school board, I have a working brain.

Re: Teacher trying to control me.

I'm not going to argue with showing your steps though; if you fuck up, it's easy to see why, and you won't mess up because you think of a number strange.

Especially with inverse of fractions, and stuff.

Exactly?

Re: Teacher trying to control me.

I'm trying to clarify...

If you did it the same but having moved something to a different side than she did, would she get mad (it would leave you with both numbers being the opposite of the way she did it)

Re: Teacher trying to control me.

a TL;DR - teachers don't care about the result, they want to see a lot of numbers which fit a pattern they expect.

Re: Teacher trying to control me.

I used to actually be good at math, but the more they forced me to do it "their" way, the more I sucked at it.

You wouldn't say a sports player sucked if they played a different way (assuming it's within the rules) if they were still a good player, right?

Memento Mori Wrote:Alright, this is the same teacher that has caused me trouble before.

This is my homeroom, where we do math. I got my homework out, and she saw it and said "I won't accept this. You need work, and you know it". Yeah, I didn't show my work.

We are finding areas, perimeters of squares, circles, etc and I just had the answers. No work. oh no, that is the worst thing you can do in your life!

She calls students up to the marker board to write down the answers, I was called up.

I simply had "X times X = whatever answer" and had it correct. However, she was still pissed because I did not have any work. After coming up there and forcing me to do it her oh so perfect way, I got the same answer I had. But apparently, it is all wrong if you do not show your work!

According to my parents, this is "helping" me. Grindteeth Then the fascist told me I had to do this again with work and turn it in. I might just write down tons of anti school information and give it to her.

I do that to students as well. It makes it easier for me to assess if all the steps are shown. There's lots of math I can do but I can't really explain how I did it. In those cases I often can't do more complicated problems that use the same process. Perhaps your teacher's problem is here:

Quote:I won't accept this. You need work, and you know it .

My approach is more like 'I know you can do this is your head but I need to see the steps on paper because it makes it easier for me to make sure everybody can build on this concept later if I teach it this way.' Your teacher turned it into a power struggle when perhaps a more cooperative approach would have been more effective. Anyway, just show your work, it's not going to kill you. Put your sword away sometimes.

If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.

she isn't trying to control you but she may be trying to you in trouble again. she is just like my reading teacher. she always looks for something bad in me.

I understand where your coming from, but, I write down what is necessary for me to write down to solve the problem. Writing down more is just a waste of paper and another tree cut down.

If I don't understand how to do a problem, I'll learn about it then, I'm not really the preparatory type.

Re: Teacher trying to control me.

Same shit here. Showing "work" is total bullshit, it makes you much slower and think with your hand instead of your head. If you ARE copying the damn thing, it is YOUR fucking problem if you don't want to learn math... Ugh

Then you should be cool with failing math. If the goal is to show how you did it and you refuse to cooperate then you might as well be reading Tolkein. I need to make sure students understand the concept. I think it's worse when teachers don't give credit to students who demonstrate they know how it's done but make a small error along the way.
