RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Texas Re-writing History (literally)

You rage.

You lose.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/03/1 ... 98003.html

Quote:Teachers in Texas will be required to cover the Judeo-Christian influences of the nation's Founding Fathers, but not highlight the philosophical rationale for the separation of church and state. Curriculum standards also will describe the U.S. government as a "constitutional republic," rather than "democratic,"

Quote:The Board removed Thomas Jefferson from the Texas curriculum's world history standards on Enlightenment thinking, “replacing him with religious right icon John Calvin.”

Quote:Numerous attempts to add the names or references to important Hispanics throughout history also were denied, inducing one amendment that would specify that Tejanos died at the Alamo alongside Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie. Another amendment deleted a requirement that sociology students "explain how institutional racism is evident in American society."

Quote:Democrats did score a victory by deleting a portion of an amendment by Republican Don McLeroy suggesting that the civil rights movement led to "unrealistic expectations for equal outcomes."

Quote:There were no historians, sociologists or economists consulted at the meetings, though some members of the conservative bloc held themselves out as experts on certain topics.

Quote:Decisions by the board -- made up of lawyers, a dentist and a weekly newspaper publisher among others -- can affect textbook content nationwide because Texas is one of publishers' biggest clients.

HAHAHA

THESE ARE THE PEOPLE IN CHARGE OF OUR EDUCATION

RIP GORE GOROTH

He was an hero. He will always be remembered.

Re: Texas Re-writing History (literally)

See, I would of never knew about this if It weren't for School-Survival, and that is an example of how blind everyone is, including myself. Something effecting national education should most definitely be an important topic. Surely without this topic this issue would have slipped by me unnoticed. That begs me to ask what else has slipped by in this catastrophe of an education system, and what has slipped by the rest of the public's attention. That my friends is how corruption occurs.

I am beginning to believe, no, I'm almost certain that adults underestimate the schools ability to predispose students to ideals that are unconstitutional and just plain wrong. They underestimate the schools "brainwashing". They do not see how powerful a tool, rather, a weapon the school system really is. If students don't question what is being force-fed to them, surely the U.S and other countries will fall into a more oppressive state. The very act of taking out one small piece of information can cause students to see a distorted view of the world. I'm just glad I learned to question things before all schools descend even further. How then will we go about informing the public in a way that they are compelled to believe us?

There was something about this on The Daily Show last week. The Texans voted not to include Oscar Romero in their "heroes who fought against injustice" list, basically because this one fat bitch said that she didn't feel he should be on it.

Re: Texas Re-writing History (literally)

Just...fuck, I lost the second I began reading.

Almost everyone in power there is just itching to get their own beliefs forced into the education system, and in turn, taking out education and replacing it with propaganda.

We're supposed to be advancing humanity, not hurling it back a few hundred years into the past.

I'm speechless. I lost right around the end, because I'm that patient right now, but holy crap... Texas really must be going further into the shits. No offense to anyone living there, of course.

In this thread, people not realizing this affects people outside of Texas because Texas is the biggest publishers of textbooks in the U.S.

Reactions?

Re: Texas Re-writing History (literally)

As much as I want to avoid playing devils advocate right now, it's not like these textbooks weren't unbiased in the first place. US History textbooks are the most blatant forms of propaganda that schools shove down students throats. They're filled with spin, half truths and outright lies. All Texas is doing is changing the direction of this bias.

Yes, textbooks are biased. But that doesn't mean we should just shrug and say "oh well" when they try to make it worse.

It's fucking Texas! These were the same guys screaming about "Oh, we're gonna secede from the US because Obama scratched our balls wrong," and then pussied out from doing this.

So? We don't need Texas! The God damned textbooks aren't needed either, you shits!

Re: Texas Re-writing History (literally)

Of course the textbooks aren't NEEDED, but the problem is that a lot of kids will be be taught this shit like it's truth, and they'll just take it on face value because the will to question things has been beaten out of them.

Shit, haven't seen you in a while. Hug Welcome back. Also, I do agree, the textbooks were already biased. Instead of trying to get the current changes undone, we should scrap the whole thing and begin again.
