To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Okay, I'm getting my hair done, and I got the idea somewhere along the line that it would be the best course of action to ask you all for advice. I really don't know why I'm doing this, because half of the suggestions will be trolling attempts. But, oh well.
I can get highlights, too, any colour I want. I was playing around with the idea of purple or red. I can only pick one, though, because I think they charge by every colour.

I was definitely thinking that.
Purple would look good it I straightened it, and red would look good if I kept it curly.

Get the highlights bleached in, and then go out and buy the dye (if they sell any near you). I had pink, purple, and red hair for months. It was great. The dye isn't too expensive, either. Here it goes for about $6 (Canadian) per tub, which usually lasts for a couple months. I used Manic Panic dye (easiest to find here).

Nah. It's not permanent, either. Semi-permanent, so it washes out eventually (a month about). You just paint it on and comb it in and then wait an hour or so. It's conditioning (supposedly) and doesn't really damage your hair, and the colour only really shows up on the bleached parts (the rest, depending on how dark your hair is, only vaguely shows up under bright light). It's pretty easy.

In that case, I'd recommend red. Since it's the first time... it's a little more "normal", so it's easier to live with if you end up changing your mind and not liking it too much.
Also, red is the best colour ever.
The dye the hairstylist will use will fade after washing, too. There really aren't any permanent colourful dyes. So after a few washes, it'll turn orange, sometimes brassy. Purple turns lavender. Purple also usually fades faster than red for some reason.
I love the way hair looks when it's dyed bright colours, but maintaining it is a pain in the ass. It's recommended to wash it in cold water (definitely the worst part), you should avoid shampooing unless absolutely necessary, you need to keep it out of the rain (rain makes it fade so quickly - it's ridiculous), swimming in chlorinated water strips it right out pretty much, and you can't use anything on it (so other than the colour, you'll need to keep it completely natural - which might not be a problem, but if you habitually straighten it or use products, you'll be paying to get it coloured a lot more often). So if you choose to go through with it, keep in mind it might get annoying.
