RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

BRAINWASHING, IS THAT ALL YOU'VE COME TO POINT OUT. YOU GUYS....

To be an anarchist, is to suffer greatly. To be a black woman is to suffer secretly. To be the earth, is to suffer silently.

I wish no harm on anyone, but those whose harmful ways will not stop without the same harm.

It's time we kill this cancerous system, before it kills us and everything left of gaia. Rise from our immaturity and take back our autonomy!

Naw dawg, it's a legitimate question IMO, even if the guy is a troll. Although, it's not a YR related question, so if I were a mod I'd move it to school talk and venting or general talk or something. Oh wait.

Edit: Moved it.

HAI GUYS LET"S FEED THESE TROLLS AND MAKE EM BIG AND STRONG SO THEY CAN GROW UP TO SUCK MASSIVE COCK?!?!??!?!!!!!!!!

School teach you to give you're childhood up for the sole purpose of getting a job, so you can buy tons of shit you don't need. That would be fine except it's forced. Brainwashing bro.

brain·wash·ing
[breyn-wosh-ing, -waw-shing]
–noun
1.
a method for systematically changing attitudes or altering beliefs, originated in totalitarian countries, especially through the use of torture, drugs, or psychological-stress techniques.
2.
any method of controlled systematic indoctrination, especially one based on repetition or confusion: brainwashing by TV commercials.
3.
an instance of subjecting or being subjected to such techniques: efforts to halt the brainwashing of captive audiences.

Hidden stuff:
Rebelnerd:
Again, I agree with you. School does teach you things. And once again, you are missing the point entirely. It's not that I disagree with school's mission or the things it teaches. What I object to is that the students are deprived of any choice in the matter. As benign as the intentions may be, any system that forces people into an environment where they have no say in their lives is a situation ripe for abuse of power.

I'm not trolling this thread. Let's see some errors with your argument:

"sole purpose of helping you get a job, so you can buy tons of shit you don't need"

How about we follow your method and none of have jobs! We can have food fall out of the air. Face it, all of our jobs are outsourced to China, and a nation can't work is EVERYONE lives on unemployment checks. For you, useless things are:
Food
Shelter
Clean water
etc.

"psychological stress techniques"

Provide specific examples.

"systemic indoctrination"

Provide specific examples

"repetition or confusion"

If you call memorizing the time tables brainwashing, then I agree that school brainwashes you.

"we're not fucking scientists"

If you support your points with a logical fallacy "I am not a scientist, therefore I cannot provide specific supporting evidence" then you are an idiot. I can't take your argument seriously unless you provide some support.

Second of all, something isn't brainwashing you if it influences you. Then the internet, GTA San andreas, drugs, a book, and a car all brainwash you. OOOOH, TAYLOR SWIFT IS BRAINWASHING YOU

Everything influences how you think.

Finally, by brainwashing, I mean systemic perpetration of a message to the point at which it changes a previous thought not through convincing you with argument but instead through constant repetition until you are forced to believe. I'm pretty sure that's what brainwashing actually is by common definition.

IE The soldier at Guantanamo bay was brainwashed that the soldiers were his terrorist friends after they kept talking to him like terrorists while he was locked in his cell after sleep deprivation.

What previous thoughts? We started the process when we were nearly infants... Also, there are numerous repetitive tasks from the pledge of allegiance, to the way the bell system is set up to make sure we go were we are supposed to go at a certain time, to following our "superiors" orders to the dime no matter what.

And again, to provide DIRECT EVIDENCE I'd have to study a group of unschooled kids and a group of publicly educated kids for years. Fuck that.

You don't need to give up your entire childhood just to get a job, we're in favor of learning naturally not being fucking stupid.

http://www.jesus-is-lord.com/schoolpr.htm

You know what's confusing, that we study topics that are completely unrelated to my life atleast at it's current stage, and only offers a vague description of what I might get with little evidence that I might actually get that.

Repetition? Spending every Monday through Friday, getting up, getting ready, going to school, going in at the exact same time every day. Then going to (as based off of last year) I go to a math "lab" for 1 hour, Then at precisely 9:00, a bell rings, and I go to another Math class. Another hour of almost no talking, and then another bell rings and I go to another room, either I go to gym, art, building skills, or music. Then another fucking bell rings, and I go to lunch, and then a short recess. Then I go to Social studies, BELL, Then I go to Language arts, BELL, and then I go to Science, BELL, and then I go to some sort of ending class, and 11 minutes later another fucking bell.

Just the bell screams repetition

Systemic Indoctrination

sys·tem·ic
   [si-stem-ik] Show IPA
–adjective
1.of or pertaining to a system.
2.Physiology, Pathology .
a.pertaining to or affecting the body as a whole.
b.pertaining to or affecting a particular body system.
3.(of a pesticide) absorbed and circulated by a plant or other organism so as to be lethal to pests that feed on it.

Well it's systemic alright, there's a system which you go through.

Definition of INDOCTRINATE
transitive verb
1: to instruct especially in fundamentals or rudiments : teach
2: to imbue with a usually partisan or sectarian opinion, point of view, or principle

Well we'll have to figure out what fundamentals mean first.

fun·da·men·tal
   [fuhn-duh-men-tl] Show IPA
–adjective

3.
being an original or primary source: a fundamental idea.

Well they're systematically teaching foundation of getting a job and "knowledge"
