RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Irrlicht (open source, fast)
UDK (need license to make profit, really large community, lots of features)
CryEngine (same as UDK except not as large community)

RE: Starting Game Development Team

Well you could think that while using the old revisions - the controls really sucked. Have tried it myself, and you really have to study the documentation and the tutorials (which miss[ed] important fragments) to get shit done. However, the newer revision has a option so you can make the controls more like "Autodesk Maya" or "Cinema 4D" and similar software, so if you already had experiance with one of those you can easly adopt now.
I've already tried to develop something with friends, but i consider it failed, to few development man power, too few man power in generall. We still have the notes somewhere I hope. Maybe you can do something with them, they atmost where "How should the UI be" "what for a game should it be"...

Lol if we actually did something decent and made money from it. Though it'd most likely be too offensive for most people.

Blender looks good, and it's open source/free so that's a plus. I don't give a shit if it's offensive, as long as I do shit! Biggrin

I use to have Cinema 4D and I have Maya as well, but I'll probably use Blender. Maybe even 3ds. That is a problem, we're going to need lots of manpower if we want to get shit done quickly. But don't worry, I have a shitload of people I know that are quick learners and might be interest in this (connections Wink )

RE: Starting Game Development Team

Update 14/12/2011: Instead of the CryEngine, we will now be using the Unreal Development Kit (UDK) to produce our game. I will update the OP with the team member roles.

RE: Starting Game Development Team

I don't have much in the ways to contribute on any technical level, my knowledge of such things is limited to perhaps as far as the reply button on this forum

But should you need some form of dialogue writing, campaign plotting, ect. I would be happy to be of service in any way that I can be. Good luck.

RE: Starting Game Development Team

I use lunix, so now I'm fucked. I guess I could contribute with modeling via Blender if you could import it into UDK somehow.

Starting Game Development Team

I've done some work with in game development. I have read books on C++, C# and XNA. I have even made a few samples and whatnot. I'd reccommend the Irrlicht engine, I like it, it has a nice and easy to use API. For modeling Blender is pretty good, heck, Blender even has a game engine inside it. For physics, I'd reccomend Bullet physics. Simple and powerful library.

EDIT: Just realized you chose the UDK engine. I just prefer to use Irrlicht.
