RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Chess

Who here plays chess....

Chickity China the Chinese chicken
You have a drumstick and your brain stops tickin'
Watchin' X-Files with no lights on
We're dans la maison
I hope the Smoking Man's in this one
Like Harrison Ford I'm getting frantic
Like Sting I'm tantric
Like Snickers, guaranteed to satisfy

Like Kurasawa I make mad films
Okay, I don't make films
But if I did they'd have a Samurai
Gonna get a set a' better clubs
Gonna find the kind with tiny nubs
Just so my irons aren't always flying off the back-swing

I enjoy playing chess, but I'm not in any kind of club or whatever.

It is a glorious game.

Re: Chess

I'm currently rated at 1527 by the USCF, would be a lot higher, but I've been having a shit run in tournaments lately. I mostly play blitz nowadays, but I'm much better in long time controls; I just can't fucking deal with another 7 rounds of four hour games ever again.

My favorite opening has to be Queen's Gambit Accepted, at least when I'm playing as white. Massive pawn center and it isn't even really a gambit if you play it right. Massive development, awesome pawn center, and you're equal in material. What more could you want?

As black, I switch it up a lot. I play a lot of standard Italian stuff, though I sometimes play a Sicilian in informal games. But in tournaments I just get out-theoried by random 8-year old experts that memorized the better part of an opening encyclopedia. Maybe even a Scandinavian for shits and giggles. Used to play Philidor's defense a lot, but the f4 push introduced a lot of king safety issues.

For Queen's pawn stuff, I like the Declined. Slav and semi-Slav are too passive for me. Gotta say, this Catalan shit is new, Topalov is really loving his new lines against Anand, though I personally play a much more relaxed Queen's Gambit.

Re: Chess

Halycon, I should play you online.

I'm starting to play chess more and more now. I'm Using the English Opening mostly, Sometimes I use the Caro Kahn. English is a good opening when playing against novices when combined with fianchettoing the two bishops.

Oh Chessmaster is ownage XP I use the 10th edition

I'd love to play a game sometime, probably after my graduation.

I'm a fan of the English, I don't play it though. It's an amazing opening for people who don't care for theory and just want a fairly straightforward development plan. Though I suspect with time it'll become very popular and overanalyzed.

My chess coach used the Kann a lot. It's very solid and I like it much more than the French, but I still prefer a more open game.

When did basic strategy fly out the window and be replaced with openings?

Re: Chess

It never did, but you have to deploy your forces to advantageous positions before you can hope to win a battle. Tactics are all well and good, but what happens when you can't get your pieces to good squares to implement your tactics? What happens when your strategy is utter shit compared to your opponent's well-researched strategy?

Re: Chess

You can have a well-researched strategy without having to call it an opening. And an opening is too rigid, with a strategy you can change it as you go.

Re: Chess

You can change ideas with an opening too. Openings just provide a basic framework of ideas for making the middlegame advantageous for you.

This is how I go about it, pre-memorised openings and ideal moves to start off and start strategising as it nears the middle game.
