RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

College and high school

The whole point of this site is that you guys wish high school could be college. But it's not and it never will be. So the most you can do is realize that high school isn't anywhere close to being fatal or soulsucking and just put up with it until you get to college.

Oh, wait, your bad grades might keep you from doing that.

Well I guess that's why some of you have to stop whining and learn to beat the system instead of wasting time hopelessly trying to fix it.

"Troll" is a common defense mechanism. If someone disagrees with you, the immediate reaction is "lol troll." You can't just jump to that conclusion because you want to be victimized, however.

Granted, sometimes you are being trolled.

Sometimes you're just wrong.

Yeah, no.

My topic wasn't a practice ground for our latest troll to hone his skills, so split.

Let go of all desire for the common good, and the good becomes common as grass.

Graduated high school with honors, .1 away from high honors. Took honors classes through roughly half of that. Dropped honors classes during the latter half of high school so I could get a couple of IT certifications.

I'm currently in college, going for a computer engineering degree. Currently have a 3.45 GPA.

Two years down the road and I still think the primary and secondary education systems around the world need massive changes. Even the tertiary education system needs a massive overhaul.

If all you can say to people stuck in a broken system is "Eh, sucks to be you, deal with it," I feel sorry for you. I'll freely admit that a number of people on this site are too blinded by angst to do anything constructive to change their situation, but shoot, at least they're a little riled up by how they're getting screwed over. At the very least, they want a change in the educational system, because they realize how terribly broken and limited it is. It's a lot more than seeing a problem and ignoring it, because "everyone has to go through that. I did, now everyone else has to."

In before "don't feed the troll" etc.

Major in something soft like english or political science. Those degree paths usually only require two semesters of math, which you can fill by taking the refresher courses of College Algebra (Algebra II) and Statistics.

@Split: Thanks for the thread, but it's not for trolling.

"Troll" is a common defense mechanism. If someone disagrees with you, the immediate reaction is "lol troll." You can't just jump to that conclusion because you want to be victimized, however.

Granted, sometimes you are being trolled.

Sometimes you're just wrong.

I'm not going to go, though. Too far away. I want to stay home and have my parents cover my cost of living. I'mma go to a local college.

But my parents' yearly salary is now low enough I could have gotten a full ride, assuming I would have gotten in.

Plus, those big universities are cesspools of orthodoxy.

That's a good idea. At least for the first year, local colleges are just a smarter idea in general, especially if your freshman major is going to consist of the same courses wherever you go.

If you're going to end up paying for it, or your parents are, it's best you choose a cheaper college (but an established, respected one. A lot of these new colleges advertised on TV aren't jack.). In the long run, if you're good at what you do you'll do good and if you're bad at it an expensive college will just put a huge debt yoke on your back.

And some people just don't need to go to college, especially if you're just going to get a BA in a non-technical field like History or Philosophy. You won't go anywhere with that. If you want to get a PhD in History, that's another matter. You can teach, or maybe if you're lucky get a job at a museum or institute.

I'm going local for Communication Design, KU is 15 minutes away. Eventually I'll be transferring to the School of Visual Arts in NY for a couple of reasons, mostly because some of their programs are more tailored to the career I'm pursuing. KU is ridiculously cheap for the first couple years, 8,000 for the whole year, especially since I'm commuting from in-state.

I have a lot of friends trying to become history teachers, and only one that recently changed his major to Philosophy and minor to Ceramics. Of course, this is the same person who is about to drop out of college and move to New Zealand to become a shepherd.

The school I will most likely be going to, though I still have a year of High School left, charges 8,084 in 2011-2012, plus books which would be 1000. The other costs, meals and room, I won't have to worry about.

So, yes, the cheaper the better.

You don't have to have a plan per se, just a general idea. That's enough to get in a general direction in life.

What does he really want? Ask him that.
