RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

HOW DO I GET OUT OF THE NEW COLLEGE MATH REQUIREMENT?

HI HOW DO I GET OUT OF THE NEW COLLEGE MATH REQUIREMENT?

Let me explain. So I go to college in the United States. I am in a 2-year program that required algebra for both the two-year program and for my 4 year major of urban forestry.

I passed algebra.

The only math requirement I was supposed to have then no more math!

My advisor and I spent an hour reviewing/ making a schedule with as little math as possible since math is extremely difficult for me.

Algebra was the only math requirement I was supposed to have and I passed it.

I was going to major in urban forestry but all of a sudden my major was discontinued and now my parents and I are thinking of putting me in horticulture since it is related to urban forestry.

Then the basic chemistry gen ed for horticulture now requires calculus which it DID NOT BEFORE!

What does calculus have to do with basic gen ed chemistry?

To be honest I am angry and I think this is not fair. THIS IS A BAIT’N SWITCH!

Math is reeeeeaaaallllly hard for me even though I passed algebra. I literally spent 8 hours a day 7 days a week with all kinds of tutors. It also would eat into my other classes' grades. I barely passed algebra with a 70%.

And even if I do pass the calculus requirement the school could still pull another bait ‘n switch on me and make me do more math for a career that has little to do with advanced mathematics.

I heard sometimes you can get waiver if you have been formally diagnosed with a learning disability.

I am formally diagnosed with ADD and ADHD.

How do I achieve this?

What do I say?

ANY PERSONAL STORIES?

My school has a Disability Support Service and I have many accommodations such as 100 percent extra time.

I AM ASKING HOW TO GET OUT OF CALCULUS OR AT LEAST EXCHANGE A CLASS FOR IT.

NOT TIPS ON DOING CALCULUS OKAY?

IF YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW TO ANSWER DO NOT WASTE MY TIME BY GIVING ME CALUCLUS TIPS. OK?

I APOLOGIZE FOR BEING BRUSK.

-Thank you very much for your help and time and for sharing personal stories with me.

RE: HOW DO I GET OUT OF THE NEW COLLEGE MATH REQUIREMENT?

sorry but lots of math is needed for anything related to chemistry/science degrees

chemistry involves a lot of chemical equations sometimes, especially stoichiometry which can take multiple pages for one equation

anyways talk to your advisor I guess and ask if there's any other options I dunno

come on!

but I said in the description that my urban forestry (not too science heavy) it did not require math b4 and now all of a sudden urban forestry was discontinued and now I have to pick horticulture. I get chemistry has math but I doubt it has calculus. And other people I knew took that same chemistry class and did well without calculus. It was a bait n' switch!

Do you know how I can get a waiver or exchange classes?

If not please don't answer.

I SINCERELY APOLOGIZE IN ADVANCE FOR BEING RUDE AND BRUSK.
