RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Some Questions From a Freshman

I know I should probably go to a school counselor for these questions but I'd feel too uncomfortable asking one of them.

-What exactly is GPA and how does it affect college applications?
-Do you need a high school diploma to get training for a vocational job?
-Best way to cope with stress/loneliness?

Thanks for the help!

Hello Sadly_not

Let me answer that GPA is a Grade point Average and usually the university checks that information but sometimes is not relevant I don't know if it is relevant enough but I am sure that university have rules who to allow when you sign the application
For going to college you need but not necessarily means that you need there are people called College without a diploma and you can enter college without a high school diploma.
It is a very hard question the last one people usually when they enter the first day the university they have induction week and in that they meet someone new you can make a lot of friends but sadly there are students that are depressed when they get in to college I was last February I am also a college student but I cope usually talking to my friends.

1-GPA is just some fancy number calculated to represent a cumulative score of your grades and are weighted based on credits(makes more sense in college since most high schools don't get fancy with "credits" even if they try to make it like credits matter in HS). So when someone looks at your GPA, they see the average grade you have based on(instead of a mere letter or 0-100 number).

2-It depends but generally, a HS degree/GED is the most minimal thing you need these days to do the most basic of stuff. Hell, I've seen cashier jobs asking for a highschool degree...

3-You can either go the self-destructive route and rely on intoxicants like drugs and alcohol, hope you hit rock bottom before things get out of control, then clean yourself up and then reminisence about the good old days when you were a drunk mess ingesting drug cocktails.

Or you find a hobby, activity, or club to join. Something you can do occassionally but don't have to commit to so you can not go when you don't want to.

Another word of advice is not merely to find friends, but to find the right friends. If anything about them makes you uncomfortable, it's not really worth hanging around them, now is it? And of course, it might even be a warning sign of something off that your brain hasn't quite registered yet.

I'm not really sure how you can get into university without a diploma. I know it's not an official requirement, but universities are competitive to enter these days. However, community college isn't that hard to get into, and it's cheaper too. But some may prefer the college life in a university.

I feel like the system really sucks right now. I don't know if cashiers jobs want high school degrees, but I know that high school diplomas don't provide you as many options as they used to. But you don't necessarily have to go to college to get a good job, trade school is an option if you'd prefer that.

In my case, the best for me has been doing martial arts. Solves both problems simultaneously. But I think any kind of activity/club that you enjoy and you can do with other people should help.

RE: Some Questions From a Freshman

Let the dust settle in your life to whatever extent possile, and let yourself think about what you wanna do. I mean wholistically, do, as in, like, right now. What do you want to do when you have nothing to do? When your done doing that, then what?

I wish I had the choice to answer that question for myself, but I got married right outta college so I only had a good 3 years of acual freedom between classes, but still very little exposure to the outside world.

Fimd something interesting to do with your time. (This ideally is done for 12 years from birth, but school tends to ruin us)
