RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Secretly learning Japanese during class

Hey, guys! I'm learning Japanese and I think that if I listened to audios in Japanese during the whole class would be better: 4~5 hours doing listening surely will make me speak Japanese (do NOT comment about my learning method, plzBlush)
The problem is: Once I've tried to use small earphones with my smartphone hiding them using my hood. Result: I was aways afraid of the visibility of both.

My request is: recommendtions to do my secret Japanese passive study during class better.

ThanksPopcorn

You could try practicing writing Japanese script instead.

If you have dark hair, use black earbuds, or if you have bright hair use white earbuds. If you don't have long hair, turn the earbud upside down and wrap the cord behind your ear.

Sorry to comment on your learning method but I think you need some context for what you hear...

Anyway, maybe you could get wireless earbuds?

RE: Secretly learning Japanese during class

Japan interests me. Noam Chomsky pointed out that the two regions outside of Europe that developed economically were exactly the two regions that fought off European controls, the US & Japan. These two countries went on to produce a ton of creative stuff totally absent any real international competition, Movies and Video Games.

I draw a parallel, that the difference between an artist and an engineer is that one has a patron, the other an employer. The US & Japan had the freedom to spend their own resources rather than work for international production (China) and so pretty much no country has produced effective competition against the US or Japan for movies and games.

Both of these industries suffer from school and high costs of production

Also I love sushi, seaweed salad, shumai... I really hated the sencha tea that I got once, but I still wanna try matcha.

Studio Ghibli for the win. Final Fantasy, almost everything Nintendo... man, I find that place intersting. They were still rocking mitary nobility (samurai) until the 19th century..

Also, for business reasons Japanese is awesome because it seems like nobody races to learn it, and they are one of the few places where learning English isn't really taken seriously

Small wireless earbuds might work. Also, you could try just putting in one earbud, running the cord down through your shirt, and then covering that ear with your hand while leaning on it. The hand you don't write with.

Covert learning is just hilarious, shining a giant spotlight on how backwards our schools are. BETTER NOT GET CAUGHT LEARNING SOMETHING!!!

Cool, it may gimme a little pain because of the constant arm position, but it may work.

/*It's particular strange and paradoxical SS having a Patreon, because most of people here are kids and adolecents whose parents would not let them participate of a forum whose the theme is hating school, beacause the reason we are here is that our parents are pro-school. To contribute, they need their parents (but not if they cheat [not the school meaning] a little bit), then, if they ask their parents to do that, they are not going to do, obviosly, and they may be prohibed to access this site again (or to use computer).
A logical thing to do is: wait to the adult live and Patreon SS. There is not another way, unfortunately.Dead*/

There's a Bitcoin address too now, in addition to Patreon. Anybody can use Bitcoin. Patreon is for the people who are long out of school and have a creditcard.

Interesting. I'm unsure if I want to get Bitcoin or not. It seems a little late to make money off it. However, it is an alternative means of online payment to Credit Cards, which involve fees and interest.
