RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

I'll hit on some other points later, but here's one more for now:

Quote:so anyhow to kind of summarize id like to help make ss a more caring and ei community. and in doing that im hoping ill get some interested volunteers. or maybe someone i can pay - someone who has paypal. someone who would want to help me sell my books or my consulting/coaching services.

(ive tried many volunteers over the years but havent really had that much luck so i think id rather pay some more like a job unless they are really highly self motivated and really get what i am doing)

but anyhowm, id like someone who would help me contact schools, and make videos of real interactions or videos of learning /teaching type scenarios.

I'm interested in a lot of overlapping things. I've talked to some educational consultants lately and I'm interested in making a guide or index that lets people know about the range of services that are available, and helps them find appropriate, understanding coaches and consultants.

I also have plans to do video-based content, even a documentary series that hits on questions of education, figuring out life, and many related topics.

Beyond School is still a fledgling idea, but we're working on making a web site that opens it up beyond the Facebook group: http://www.beyond-school.net/. We have a lot of work to do, but here's a rough vision statement:

The focus of "Beyond School" is networking. We want to foster members' active involvement with other passionate learners here - intellectually curious, like-minded people of all ages from all over world. Many of us have helpful experiences to share, or ideas that need input. We have Google Hangouts, a member map, surveys, a voluntary data-base of members' interests, talents, and skills - all for those who wish to connect. If you have an idea of something you'd like this group to do or some skill to offer to make things even better, please use the contact page to get in touch.

The idea for Beyond School came out of another facebook group, UnCollege Network, which came about after Priscilla (who also does College Reality Chat) got in touch with Dale Stephens of http://uncollege.org back in 2011. But Dale ended up narrowing the focus of UnCollege, while Priscilla and others were interested in building a community and addressing questions of education, meeting people, and making sense of work and life decisions more broadly.

Quote:and btw xc if u read this, id like to know if u have ur own website somewhere. i looked at the two links u have below ur posts but the fb one wouldnt let me in if im not signed in.. (and i pretty much hate fb) and i didnt see if u were directly connected to college reality chat one..

I don't have a built out site at the moment. I'm still figuring out how to structure a site! And how to present content in a way that doesn't overwhelm people. I'm part of CRC and Beyond School but we're still defining exactly how to build them out when so much good content is already in other places (like your site.) You can see the beginnings of offering an index of coaches on CRC, but what I have in mind is a bigger index.
