RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

How are most people good at school?
I don't know how, but how is it that people pass tests, or school and can graduate without even learning? I was wondering this because right now I'm in Algebra, and intensive math, but I don't get how if I feel like I'm just like every other kid in school. Like I'm in some honors classes too, but then I'll see like even the smartest kids (and I know they're smart because some of them I've known since elementary, and some of them you can really tell) and they don't even try, or they'll be talking the whole class or they'll be using their phones. But when I try to focus in on the subject I only learn like one or two things whereas other students when they get called on (and they're the students I just said that use there phones and talk and all of that) they like know the answer, and like I could've been paying attention and I didn't pick it up.
I've tried looking everywhere, I've tried changing the way I've learned and it just doesn't seem to help. I partially think I have a learning disability. But I don't believe in mental disabilities or anything like that because I just believe you control everything you do, well that's how it seems like to me. Which is why I'm hesitant to go ask my doctor or counselor or something like for advice because from what it seems like, if I do have a "learning disability" the only way to "fix it" or "cure it" is to give you medications but I mean I just don't get the whole concept of how that really helps. And I want to naturally learn, not "artificially" learn because of medications that are helping me. And also, if I can learn how to do other things then how come I can't learn about other things in school?
Does anyone have any comments, or advice for me? Thank you for reading this too. Sorry that it was long.

Some people are going to be smarter and learn faster than you. That's a fact of life. It even happened to me, once.

RE: How are most people good at school?
I agree with brainiac. I don't believe being "good" at school makes you smart as well, because basically you are just listening to what people say, memorizing it, than putting it on paper, than the school calls you intelligent for it, because they see it as learning. :/ In the end, you are the decider of your own intelligence, it doesn't come from having others do the job for you.

Oh boy do I wish that was true.

Probably a good idea. College is expensive, stressful, and if you have no friends or activities to make the experience worth enduring, it's a waste of time.
Aint leaving without a fight though. They shall rue the day they fucked with me
I just need to plan it out and find people since it's something that requires lots of arithmatic skills(it's going to involve rankings and what I see as a lack of fiscal accountability that needs to be addressed)

You should take into account the marginal benefit and the marginal cost of finishing your degree. The effort you have put in already doesn't matter because it is gone

you can be good at school, if you receive care from parent as well as teachers in the school. Even I am blessed with my parents and grand parents including teaches at preschool and highschool, and so that I am running a preschool and spreading the same for kids.

RE: How are most people good at school?
To readily submit to "and now for something completely different" suggests to me a lack of self, easily absorbed but actually quite passive. My class has a lady who seems "smart" and for many different reasons she seems like one of those few people i actually hate.
I think looking for meaning in things gives you a disadvantage only because most people dont know or care what meaning is, and so they go along, or follow along, more effectively
Purity is to Believe only that which deserves it.
Wisdom is to follow only the Opinion which makes the best use of evidence.
Excellence is to be mindful of all these things in Living.
