RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Is this the meaning of life?

I was going to write a long and very detailed thread on this, but I can't be bothered because I'm way too tired. I don't know if anyone has thought about this, but I just came to think about it the other night.

The meaning of life is emotions. Emotions is linked with absolutely everything, and it's very confusing yet very obvious. Feelings is what drives us, what gives birth, what kills us, why we try to achieve the impossible and even why we try to find the meaning to life. Without emotions life wouldn't have meaning. Why would you even do anything if you couldn't feel success, pain, love and so on? It's the very ingredient to what people think is the meaning of life.

Any thoughts? Smile

Can't bees get angry?

The meaning of life is still a mystery, I don't know if it's emotions.
I especially find it laughable that some people think the meaning of life is to have babies. I think the meaning of life, is to well give it meaning, or it could be self creation.

I don't think that life has a meaning, but emotions are what causes me to want to continue living.

I think that's part of the meaning, not all of it. Of course, I don't believe that there is anything like "THE" meaning; different people create different meanings according to their own realities. There are certainly things we're programmed to do; natural instincts, if you will. From that POV, one could say that the meaning of life is to survive.

my view on the point of life is to do what you want. life is a gift, don't let it go to waste, no one knows if you can retry or never get it back.

Is this the meaning of life?

The meaning of life is to give your life a meaning. Your own meaning - unique to you... not anyone else's idea of what your life should mean.

Emotions are very useful. If we know how to listen to them, they'll tell us almost everything we need to know. If you're happy - do more of what makes you happy. If you're sad, try to do less of that. If you've been horribly frustrated for years, it means you haven't been responding to your emotions properly, or maybe other people have been completely disregarding them. And the healthy response (also the one that most sane people recommend) would be to get those people the hell out of your life... but this is where being a kid becomes a big problem... you can't easily just get parents, teachers, and people in school out of your life.

And then people just get used to having their feelings disregarded, and see it as normal, so they disregard their own feelings for years and decades, and then they have a mid-life crisis, which is apparently a normal thing now, get some psychiatric drugs, carry on like normal, retire and die.

Moral of the story? Feelings are important. Don't ever disregard them. Razz

Is this the meaning of life?

I'd say the meaning of (human) life is experience...Which includes emotions, learning in the deepest sense of the word, and more "do" experiences like dancing or working or eating or something with the people you care about.

For some people changing the world in some way, like fighting the school system, finding a new medicine for a disease, saving the bees etc is also really important.
And that for sure gives purpose to life, if nothing else.
