RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.
-SoulRiser

RE: Non-driving
I also have a fear of driving so yes you are not alone, I may even have a phobia. I become extremely nervous in situations like this and dread so much being seriously hurt or killed. I don't ever want to drive like you.

RE: Non-driving
Its a bit impractical for most. Mass transit is not always reliable and certainly no less dangerous than driving yourself. Bikes will only take you so far, and have their own level of danger. Walking isnt exactly practical in many areas.
Seeing as there is no practical reason to not drive (even countries with high fuel costs have many drivers), anybody disliking the concept of driving likely has some sort of fear or anxiety that makes it difficult or impossible for them. You still may want to ask yourself where you want to live, what lifestyle you want, and how you expect to hold a job (and what sort of job) to make sure your evasion of driving doesnt cause you to unecessarily diminsh your qualiy of life.

I have a friend who has excellent driving skills, but won't actually drive a car because it's dangerous, and he gets nervous of other drivers.

RE: Non-driving
I hope you find yourself in an urban environment surrounded by everything you need then.
I live in a lonely suburb. There's nothing but houses around me for miles. A car is essential, and my Volkswagen being at the dealership for months while they continuously fail to figure out what's wrong with it isn't helping with my sanity when the only thing within walking distance is the same houses I've seen my entire life.
Who am I? Who are YOU?

Get a 3rd gen toyota. It might be older than most on this site, but those things were built damn good.
We had a car when we lived in NYC but we didn't really rely on it since the subway and bus practically allowed you to get anywhere in the city. Now we live in NJ and basically each family member has their own car(and a chunk of our money goes to car insurance since NJ has one of the highest insurance costs). We have NJ transit but it isn't necessarily the most reliable form of transportation and feels more like a coach bus taking you on a long distance travel rather than an inter-city ride.
Trains and train stations are quite well-off primary roads, being buried deep in some area of the town, or located along a highway(seriously, how is that commuter friendly in any way? What the hell am I supposed to do, use the highway to walk to my destination?). Mostly because...you take a car to the station(yeh what awesome public transportation that you still need a car to get to it). I think the park-and-ride concept is in some sense quite silly(but in a state packed with cars and the insane toll to get into NYC, it's cheaper to park and take a bus or train than to take your own car. Toll wise, and parking wise)

Statistically it is less dangerous, at least in terms of fatality rate.

What do you mean you don't like riding in giant metal death machines?
I wish I had a driver's license so I could drive wherever I wanted, all with the hopes that I may one day get into a car accident, killing the people I collide with instantly, whilst my car combusts and I slowly burn to death trapped inside with no hope of rescue.

My learner's permit expired a month ago. Now I have to start the whole damn thing all over again, and I don't feel any better at driving than when I started.

RE: Non-driving
If youve played any vidya game with driving, you grasp a portion of the basics of driving (or have gone go-karting).
A good driver doesnt have to translate to F1 racer. As long as you can stay in lane, change lanes safely, drive the speed li it or flow, and know your basic road laws (like stay off the damn left lane if you arent either passing a car or speeding like hell), you will suffice. Its a steering wheel, 2 pedals, and a stick that makes it go back, front, or lock in place (park). The only obstacle is the fear the driver has...

I think all my racing game time has made my real driving improve as well, so there's that.
Still, I do quite like public transport or having someone else drive me around too.

Im a 21st century video game addict. Hopefully in a decade or so, all the grumpy old folk of the 20th century will die and we won't hear them bitch about how we're doing something bad when playing video games for hours and how they used to x-y-z back in the day(honestly, if they had video games "back in the day" they'd be just as addicted).
Hopefully by the time I grow old, the number of assholes who consider video games a "waste of time" and anybody who plays them "anti-social pariahs" will be dead and gone.

Probably not for another 20 years. Maybe in 10 years, they stop giving a fuck about it, realizing they are wrong. Though that likely won't happen.

RE: Non-driving
Back in my day, we were addicted to books.
Hello, traveler.
This is an ancient account I have not used in a long time. My views have changed much in the intervening months and years.
Nonetheless, I refuse to clean it up. Pretending that I've held my current views since the beginning of time is what we in the industry call a lie. Asking people to do so contributes to moralistic self-loathing. "See, those people have nothing damning! I do! I'm truly vile!"
Because you can never be a good person with a single blemish on the moral record, I thought that simply entertaining some thoughts made me irredeemable. Though I don't care for his writing style, William Faulkner presents a good counterexample. He went from being a typical Southern racist to supporting the civil rights movement. These days we'd yell at him for that, probably.
People are allowed to change their views.
Nevertheless, this period of my life has informed some of how I am today. In good ways and bad ways. To purge it would be to do a disservice to history. Perhaps it will not make anyone sympathetic, but it may help someone understand.
If, after reading all this, you still decide to use the post above as evidence that I am evil today, ask yourself if you have never disagreed with the moral code you now follow. In all likelihood you did, at some point. If some questions are verboten, and the answer is "how dare you ask that," don't expect your ideological opponents to ever change their minds.

Hopefully by the time I grow old, the number of assholes who consider video games a "waste of time" and anybody who plays them "anti-social pariahs" will be dead and gone.
...and in a few decades I'll be telling the young folk who aren't playing video games that they're wasting their lives and act genuinely concerned for their futures. I mean, how are you going to thrive in life if you haven't even played through the classics yet?
I know a lot of people that don't really like playing video games, and that's fine, honestly. They're not harming others' or the environment, so it's okay.
What'll happen when they have kids and they still don't like video games?
So? It's not really a big deal.
