RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.
-SoulRiser
The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with.
My contact details are here.
Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

RE: Suspended for a homemade clock...?
Barack Obama has reached out to this young guy and invited him to the White House and it has been stated no charges would be filed against Ahmed, so things appear to be looking up for him. Had circumstances been a little different, he might be much worse off. There's been a big push by conservatives to get guns in to schools lately, to security guards and even teachers. Clearly the solution to people bringing guns in to schools and shooting students is people bringing more guns in to schools.
He should be pretty happy nobody involved with this huge mistake had a gun. Islamophobia is prevalent in America, and this exemplifies the problem perfectly. Had he been a white blonde guy named Jeff, I don't think anybody would have thought twice about his clock.

RE: Suspended for a homemade clock...?
A metal box full of wires.
For the authorities that had to be a pretty difficult judgement call. When he explains it on YouTube it seems obvious but in real life I can understand wanting to make sure exactly what that is. That doesn't include treating the kid like a criminal but if it were my class and a student just started showing me that thing and telling me it was a clock I would alert administration immediately and say someone besides me needs to figure this out. Like I said, the kid shouldn't be treated like a criminal, but on the other hand - I don't have any idea what real homemade bombs look like but that does look like how they look in the movies. Better safe than sorry. So I'm saying they did the right thing checking it out but they did the wrong thing assuming the worst. Finger printing him and not letting him call home was stupid. He certainly shouldn't be suspended. Just explain to him that you can't bring things that look like that to school. People might might freak out.

He showed it to his engineering(Im guessing this means science) teacher who told him not to show anybody else.
Why? Clearly the teacher had knowledge of it, and approved of it. The other teacher was just being a typical Murikan shill thinking the kid with the "muslim" name(dafuq is a Muslim name? Do Americans have "Christian" names then?) and a tiny device with a clock on it.
There's literally no excuse or justification. It's a clear case of people being stupidly fearful and overreacting. Hell, the mayor is a known islamophobe who likes to make anti-Islam speeches(I believe they call them "Anti-Sharia Crusaders").
The police then go off to say they didn't get a broad explanation. A broad explanation on what, a fucking clock?
He wanted to show his teacher his technical skills, his teacher liked it but told him to keep it hidden, the clock makes a sound and the other teacher who sees it goes "Muslim+Clock=BOMB!" and reports it, then they get cops to come in and try to force him to admit it wasnt a clock but a "hoax bomb"(implying he was trying to "terrorize" people).
Ain't no justification there. The intent wasn't caution.

RE: Suspended for a homemade clock...?
I can't wait for "THE CLOCK TERROR: JIHADISTS INFILTRATING YOUR HOME" to become a real headline.
Hello, traveler.
This is an ancient account I have not used in a long time. My views have changed much in the intervening months and years.
Nonetheless, I refuse to clean it up. Pretending that I've held my current views since the beginning of time is what we in the industry call a lie. Asking people to do so contributes to moralistic self-loathing. "See, those people have nothing damning! I do! I'm truly vile!"
Because you can never be a good person with a single blemish on the moral record, I thought that simply entertaining some thoughts made me irredeemable. Though I don't care for his writing style, William Faulkner presents a good counterexample. He went from being a typical Southern racist to supporting the civil rights movement. These days we'd yell at him for that, probably.
People are allowed to change their views.
Nevertheless, this period of my life has informed some of how I am today. In good ways and bad ways. To purge it would be to do a disservice to history. Perhaps it will not make anyone sympathetic, but it may help someone understand.
If, after reading all this, you still decide to use the post above as evidence that I am evil today, ask yourself if you have never disagreed with the moral code you now follow. In all likelihood you did, at some point. If some questions are verboten, and the answer is "how dare you ask that," don't expect your ideological opponents to ever change their minds.

RE: Suspended for a homemade clock...?
Every electronic device has, at its core, a clock.
BUT WAIT
Clocks are circles
And there are THREE main operating systems
What shape has three sides?
A TRIANGLE
And what is a circle in a triangle?
ILLUMINATI
BUT WAIT!
AC generators which power all our devices (even indirectly via chargers) invented by Nikola Tesla
T is the 20th letter of the alphabet
N is the 14th letter of the alphabet
20 - 14 is 6
And AC switches 60 times a second
And 60 / 20 is THREE
which makes SIX SIX SIX

Yeahh uhh the thing is that an important part of a bomb is that it can explode. I fail to see what part of a circuit board and digital display is explosive or even looks explosive to someone who doesn't have their head up their ass.
[Also, most of the pictures I've seen are such that the scale is misleading. The whole thing is in a hard-sided pencil case, not a briefcase, and based on cross-referencing it to the Amazon listing is probably about 8x6x2.]

Suspended for a homemade clock...?
I was just reading about this, and yeah, this whole thing is ridiculous. It shows how deeply rooted Islamophobia is right now in American society (especially given that much "exposure" we receive of Islam isn't exactly positive); good thing this kid was let off. It also shows that in general how fucking ridiculous schools are when it comes to dealing with these situations. I mean FFS water guns are still banned on many campuses... actually I've read how some school districts have also begun banning football jerseys because of "gang threats"... the mind boggles.

Muslims come from all different backgrounds, think about Bosniaks, or the Chinese people in Malaysia/Indonesia for example. Most Muslims aren't even of Arab descent, and the majority of Muslims are Pakistani, East Indian, and Indonesian(which Indonesia is a collection of many different languages, like that of Javanese, Achenese and many other languages).
