RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

How can I go to college without finishing high school?
That's a common misconception -- but many homeschoolers, unschoolers, and dropouts go to college. I went to college a year earlier than I would have if I'd completed high school. At least in the US, it's easy to get into many colleges; there are a few routes, but in many cases all you need is a GED/TASC/HiSET equivalency diploma and possibly other placement test scores.
For more selective colleges, showing a custom-produced transcript, high SAT/ACT scores, and a good essay where applicable allow many homeschoolers to get admittance without attending high school. It's also possible to go to a more accessible college first, then do well there and apply to transfer to more selective colleges.
The big question is whether college, or at least completing an entire degree program, is worth it. In some cases, it's possible to get financial aid that covers the cost of tuition, but in many cases people end up in debt. If there's not a specific reason to get an expensive college degree, it's worth looking at other options.
These days, so much of the content of college is free or cheap online, and you can connect with all kinds of people without having to meet them at a campus. But it does require a different strategy than just doing what someone else to get grades and credits, that's for sure.

How can I go to college without finishing high school?
As tempting as it is for me, I could quit school right now. Why? I have an unconditional offer for a university, which basically means if I want to, I can go there this year without sitting my A level exams. Problem is, the uni isn't the greatest. The place is already there for you; you can take it if you want.
But because my other four university offers are conditional, including Birmingham where I want to go, I have to stay until June to complete my A level exams.
Me and my friends were recently debating this at school though; if you have an unconditional offer, why bother coming into school at all?

RE: How can I go to college without finishing high school?
Dan Greenberg who founded the Sudbury Valley School used to review college applications. His recommendation is implicit in an interview, that you have a clear idea about what you want to do and have a clear idea of why the school you are applying to specifically suits your goals.
If a college doesnt like that, elsewhere would probably be better.

That's how the education system works, you can't go to college without finishing high school. But there are options, for example studying online.

Blake Boles also has a whole book called College Without High School: A Teenager's Guide to Skipping High School and Going to College. Why do parents have to keep harassing kids about their grades and forcing them to go to school, if this is the case?
There are ways to by pass it, you can ask help from the local school administration.
Usually given to people who were over aged to do high school or with IQ student, I think it accelerate you or jump from different level of school grade that match your scores/IQ.
