RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

P.E = nightmare

Fuck PE. This subject is horrible. I can understand why the physically orientated people like it, but I personally hate it with a passion. I have severe social anxiety so PE is an effective recipe for a panic attack. I had to deal with the shit until year 10 too. When I was in year 8, PE was optional for anybody above year 8, but when I went into year 9, PE became compulsory. Fuck that shit.

It is the number one subject for embarrassments. Looking like a fool in front of everybody was most of what I'd be doing in PE. I'm not a sports-person, so I was terrible at all of the activities. I was that kid who didn't know what to do with the ball when it was passed to him.

That sense of dread when I was next to start performing in front of everybody was horrible. Last year, I had a particularly bad PE class in which, I had a panic attack; screaming, hyperventilating, tunnel vision, everything. It was horrible and just thinking about it makes me anxious. Around that time, since I had PE twice a week, it was near constant stress & anxiety throughout the week. 'Ugh, I have PE in a few days yet again'. Thankfully, the panic attack got me out of PE for the rest of the year. At one point, PE was stressing me out so much that I was having small mental breakdowns every week or so; mainly soon after a PE class.

What are your thoughts on Physical Education? Do you like it? Do you hate it? Now that I'm in year 11, I don't have to do it. Yay.

I can relate to you; we have gym every day and we're graded in how well we dance in the dance unit.

RE: P.E = nightmare

What are your thoughts on Physical Education?

When western civilization started to turn away from Christianity, it started to embrace classical culture as its ideal. Much of Greek culture including sports and the academy were adopted.

The fact that Greek culture was based on the exploitation of slaves and had a major homosexual theme running throughout it is often left out of history books because it would make the Greeks sound a little creepy.

However, even the Greeks did not make physical education compulsory. This was done by American and European educational "experts" who saw physical fitness as important to the state. You perhaps have seen the Nazi films of thousands of young people exercising.

The fact that nothing is more personal than your own body is important to help break down any sense of individuality. If you are embarrassed, humiliated, or otherwise violated in public, it can help in the goal of education to make you more compliant.

If you want to keep in shape, let your friends know that you are available to help them move to a new apartment and you will find increased popularity and something to do every weekend.

RE: P.E = nightmare

I don't really see how P.E is education. I'm not athletic by no means but I actually enjoy gym.

P.E = nightmare

In most schools, PE is just a code-name for a period that allows making fun of all "intellectuals" and to get off scot free. I believe it was invented to allow kids to vent out "stress" even though it may cause more, due to not knowing how to play a said sport. In short, it shouldn't be compulsory and less emphasis should be placed on the athletic prowess of children, and more focus on cooperation. It would be a much better cooperation exercise than "group work".

RE: P.E = nightmare

It is physical education which makes most apparent the enormous divide between the social rights of children and adults. A person of a certain disposition can rationalize the academic responsibilities of children by relating them to the corporate responsibilities of working adults (ignoring the absence of pay for schoolwork), but forced and uncompensated physical labor to the supposed benefit of the employee is an outlandish and Orwellian idea that, if applied to adults, would trigger unprecedented political backlash. I often amuse myself by visualizing the incredulous reactions of my middle-aged neighbors if mandated by the government to take time out of their lives to exercise. When their eyebrows return from the backs of their heads and they recover sufficiently to speak, they remind the federal agents who issued the mandate that their health is their own business, and that if it is their right to commit suicide--the ultimate detriment to health--then surely it is their right to neglect or damage their health in lesser ways. "If our train carries no passengers," they inquire, "why can't we run it off the tracks?"
