To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Would you donate money to help maintain and improve School Survival?

Many of us have seen the forums down lately. It seems that this problem can be resolved by using a more expensive hosting plan that offers more memory.

That got me thinking. Maybe some forum members and lurkers would be open to contributing to help pay for hosting and/or the work involved in maintaining and improving the site?

Why would you, or would you not?

If you got some thing in exchange, would that increase your interest in contributing? (Like t-shirts, postcards, posters, or anything else along the lines of what Kickstarter campaigns tend to offer.)

Kinda like colleges and hospitals do when they build new buildings.

Hmm... that's giving me ideas.

But seriously, if we're going to fundraise, it'd also be good to discuss what to spend money on, beyond the basic cost of hosting the forums. One idea is to design and order some kind of cards with education quotes. Another is to really re-design the front page as a bona fide design, coding, and writing project, even if it means paying/hiring people.

Yeah, but I'd need to see consideration of the expenses and justification of such; for example, details of current usage, whether that would have to be accommodated by a dedicated server or VPS, or could be handled by an account on nearlyfreespeech.net, etc.

It'd be nice to help but I don't want to throw money down the drain for a bad solution.

If only I had the money to spend. I'm going to be working soon, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to contribute then. IDK how much I'll be making there, but if I start earning money that's above averagely the minimum wage I know I could.

To be honest if there is donation then the finances of the site will need to be released, at least on a monthly basis.
