RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Help Me Choose a Laptop

So last night my grandfather and his cunt wife (though staying on her good side has benefited me well) gave me "graduation gift"

Oh just a check for $1000..
And I'm supposed to spend it on school stuff.
A laptop counts as school stuff.
Plus i'm getting financial aid and I apparently have a college fund worth $2000

Anyways, my mom said she planned on putting in like $200. And I don't wanna spend anymore than like $500 of my own.

So don't go too crazy.

$500 of my own tehehehe that sounds insane
Biggrin

Help Me Choose a Laptop

You wanna be able to play games on it?

Myself, I got one of those customizable Clevo/Sager things that lets you pick most of the parts yourself. The keyboards they come with aren't too great, though. Speakers are shitty too. Everything else is great.

Or you can make a desktop for around $300 or so.

Although I don't know much about laptops.

Help Me Choose a Laptop

Never buy an HP laptop - I learned this the hard way. They are notorious for coming installed with ridiculous bloatware, and the auto-updates make it even worse.

RE: Help Me Choose a Laptop

I don't have the room for a desktop, plus I wanna be able to take it to school and shit.

And I mostly just want to be able to multitask a ton. I tend to do a lot at once.
Being able to play games would be super cool too.

RE: Help Me Choose a Laptop

I got a Samsung with switchable graphics and it has been nothing but unreliable. So stay away from those.

RE: Help Me Choose a Laptop

So avoid HP and Samsung. I'm avoiding Toshiba as well (both my old laptops were Toshiba satellites, kind of tired of that).
I'd do what soul did, but the bad speakers thing kills it for me.

RE: Help Me Choose a Laptop

Samsung might be okay in general. It's possible I got a lemon. But switchable graphics just seem awful, and the drivers are part of the reason this computer is fuqed.

Help Me Choose a Laptop

For under a grand I'd go with a dell, I use one for work and the battery life seems to be pretty good. A bit advice for fucks sake stay away from acer laptops, my friend had one and almost literally burned his balls (battery pack recall fucking thing caught fire)

Help Me Choose a Laptop

Acer is the shittiest thing known to man. Only buy one if you plan on burning it.

Lenovo's quite good. I'm using one of theirs right now. Dell's also alright but I don't know if they can make game-type things.

Let's see...
$500 of your own cash
$1000 graduation money
$2000 college grant
$200 mother's cash

You have $3700 to spend. You can do well with that and I don't know if Dell does game things.

Lenovo?

Just throwing out another brand.

From the sound of it...most laptop brands sound like crap.

Actually I've had good experiences with Acer, although I might just have been one of the few.

I've heard good things about Lenovo's. And I've tried their keyboards on display models, I really like how they type.

Acer's aren't that bad... or, my and my friend's netbooks are good at least. Dunno about their others.

The other laptop I was considering going for at the time was a Lenovo Y500 I think. Might be old now.

RE: Help Me Choose a Laptop

Are you planning to use the $2000 for this or largely for tuition?

If you want the most efficient use of your money, find a not-too-used Thinkpad on Craigslist.

Absolutely goddamn appalling.

As for my advice: buy a business class laptop, those tend to last quite a long time and overall they're kind of great.

What's she being a butt about?

The screen resolution seems a bit low for the size of the screen... but I'm nitpicky about such things. Also, it won't be great for games.
