RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Sister Suspended

I've been out of high school for a while now but, the sheer stupidity of admin never ceases to amaze me. My sister was suspended for wearing yoga pants. No, nothing offensive on them, regular fucking lululemon pants. Apparently these are considered "obscene" by the school dress code. So I read this revised code, the shit list includes; "I love boobies bracelets"(whatever they are), bright coloured shoes and any other materials which are and I quote "distracting to faculty and students as well as unacceptable in a professional environment".

The one that really struck me was the shoe rule. Are they going to start sending out a list of acceptable shoe colours to wear? Oh and you can only use the restroom 3 times a week now. This is same school I went to before I graduated, we never had these bs rules. Sure there were asinine rules but nothing this ludicrous. There are cameras all along the outside of it now, poor kids can't even have a cigarette in peace. When I was there they had a designated smoking area with seats and ashtrays by a row of trees . Gone! I truly feel sorry for teens today.

Actually in some states it's illegal for schools to not allow I love boobies bracelets(although it's somewhere in the north, can't remember the exact circuit though)

Pretty Much my only signature...I'm mainly a lurker....you can find me on the IRC (or on DnE and their IRC).

Yes, because we all know that not trying to make everyone look similar is going to "distract" us.

"Aw man, those brightly colored shoes just distract the shit out of me... I was trying to take a test and the chick sitting next to me was wearing red shoes, and shit man... I just don't fucking know, they put me in a trance or something!"... said no one ever.

I wonder if they'd try to kick a student with a physical abnormality out of school for being too "distracting". "Yes, we're sorry, but your son having two different colored eyes is just too distracting... I'm afraid he won't be able to return to class unless he gets a contact lens or something."

Dead, nothing would surprise me one bit. I figure it's only a matter of time before the government funded schools here all go to some sort of uniform. They debated it years back but never acted on it. Think about it would be perfect, some 3rd party contractor would make a killing off taxpayer money selling the uniforms. But of course you could still carry a kirpan (yes you can legally carry a small sword here in Canada), walk around in a burka and demand one toilet in every bathroom to be replaced with a foot washing station. Oh and bitch to your hearts content about the lack of halal chicken in the cafeteria. I think a knife is a lot more dangerous than neon pink shoes. I guess I'm the crazy guy.

RE: Sister Suspended

Where I'm at teachers aren't allowed to wear jeans and t-shirts but that's all I ever wear. Some kids say, "Why do we have to follow dress code if you don't?" I'm just like, "When did I ever say anything about your clothes?" teachers get mad at me for not enforcing dress code. They say cancer doesn't do dress code check in homeroom. When they say do dress code check on the announcements I have a running gag where I go on and on about how wonderful everybody looks Some of the kids are such sneaks though they still try to snitch on kids with dress code violations to which I usually respond "I'm gonna write you up for snitchin' " lulzzzz. Z. Zzz.

Wait, is this some kind of Catholic or charter school?

These schools tend to be rather strict with dress code having gone to a charter school myself back in Elementary. But yeah, I say protest. This is fucking ridiculous.

This is catholic school, but all schools where I am follow the same standard dress codes. It is a public school as they receive the same funding as a "public school" they both get their money from the province. The only difference is the catholic schools may require you to take a religious studies course. This must be mind boggling to anyone in the states with the whole separation of church and state. Canada for some fucked up reason funds catholic schools with taxpayer money. It used to be required that one parent had to be baptized catholic. However, that was struck down and anyone of any faith can attend. Makes no sense does it? That's a whole other discussion I could spend hours on.

America funds religious 'private' schools with public money using a 'voucher system'. The greediest, scummiest 'schools' in America are non-profit organizations ripping off tax payers.

If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.

My family is not religious whatsoever they only reason my sister goes there is because of its in the suburb we live in. The public high school is a 30 minute commute and is somewhat safer than the inner city school.

My school was able to raise money to buy a new $11 million building, yet they had to raise tuition each year(while still getting money from donations) claiming "the need for more money to improve student education".

Personally I just think they were taking donations and on top of that squeezing parents for cash on top of it.

Is this for real? What's a student who always needs to use the bathroom at around, say, 1:30 PM more than 3 days a week gonna do? What if a student drinks a lot of fluids, or somesuch?

Piss in class then. I'm guessing it restricts restroom usage, not the number of times you can relieve yourself?

Nobody restricts my pissing times! NOBODY!
(Seriously though. If my company told me I can use the bathroom x number for times for x many minutes, I'd delete everything in their databases and then shred all the documents I could get my hands on. I'm too hardcore rebel...)

RE: Sister Suspended

Other teachers where I teach act like using the toilet is optional. Some of them even get mad at me for letting any student who asks go. There's no way for students to go in between classes. And teachers ask, "Is it an emergency?" I mean, what kind of answer do they expect? It's not like a problem that just goes away. They even tell the teachers that if we need to use the toilet ourselves during class we can be sued or fired if something happens while we're in the restroom. They tell us to call on the intercom if it's an "emergency". A lot of teachers get bladder and kidney problems because of it.

And while I'm on the subject, the boys restrooms at our school are hideous. The urinals are like 6 inches from each other. The boys must get splashback of another's urine on them. I'm not even trying to joke. And when I've mentioned this at staff meetings I just get laughed at. That's another reason why I try to arrange it so my students go one at a time, just in case he or she wants a modicum of privacy for whatever reason. If someone asks to go while another student is out I ask, "Do you mind waiting until so and so gets back?" It's always cool. I can't understand why so many teachers are so weird about it.

If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.

I did that exact same thing to a place where I worked and hated once. They had all these government contracts that had the original signatures on them and the day that I quit without I notice I filled my bag with them and dropped them into the garbage in front of 7-11 on my way home.

That's the great freedom of the world outside school. Any attempts to institute the shit they do in school onto the real world(aka outside school environment) would backfire like a thermonuclear. A company "controls" it's employees, but if you push them too far, they won't hesitate to leave without blasting apart a portion of the company.

I fear that what teachers and admins learn in school is also bad overall. An admin used to managing a school would do horribly if he kept these methods when moving to another non-school occupation.

Can we agree that the current system is pretty much bad for everyone now? Biggrin

I think we do agree on that. And school admin do try to manage the teachers like teachers manage students. And some teachers get so used to be condescending to the students that they start acting like that to adults. I'll put them right back in check quick fast and in a hurry though.
