RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.
Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.
How do I deal with being afraid of tornadoes?
Usually, I would have a laptop to go into my local weather chatroom and can keep tabs on weather websites, but now I don't and today is going to be a bit severe. We have a 50% of a tornado today (TOR:CON).
When I say I'm afraid, I mean like phobia.
Any ideas as to how I can feel better during this?
The best thing you can do is turn on any TVs and radios to a weather alert station (or at least using a cell phone for weather advisories), follow advice they give (for instance, taking cover in a sheltered area), then distract yourself there until the tornado passes.
The distraction element is key to not focusing on your fear. Music, portable games, and mind-exhausting activities can suppress the fear, though I can't guarantee they'll eliminate it. Chances are pretty good, though, that you won't be in harm's way.

Our weather forecasting is very, very good in the modern age. We can predict a tornado at least a few minutes in advance, which is all you need.
Also your odds of dying in a tornado or even being in one are VERY slim. You should be more scared of dying in a car accident.
The odds of being in a tornado is slim.
The odds of being in a STRONG tornado is even slimmer (most are relatively weak, but may look scary).
The odds of dying or being seriously injured is even slimmer.
Also keep in mind that some of the deaths from tornados are from people NOT taking shelter, or being in their car, or being under a bridge (do not ever do this, this is a myth, a bridge is extremely dangerous during a tornado).
So if a tornado is headed your way, grab the biggest pillow you have, jump into a bathtub, lay down face down (your back will protect a lot of your vitals), and put the pillow over your head. Hell if you have a bicycle helmet, put that on.
Seriously, tornados aren't scary, you should be more scared of car accidents and yet people jump into cars all the time and don't give a fuck.
Phobias need not be (and indeed aren't) as rational as you are, Desu. I believe ..V.. was asking for some form of coping mechanism, not a logical argument intended to get him to snap out of his fear (which doesn't work; I've tried that with people before, with disastrous results).

If you have some severe phobia of tornados that significantly affects your normal every day living, you need to see a psychologist.
I don't know what you could do other than prepare adequately, and maybe educate yourself more about tornados. Actually read about the meteorological science behind tornados so it's not just some big scary thing, but a fascinating natural phenomenon.
