RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

How do people afford this
How do people even afford new TVs? Everyone has anHD TV now. How are we going to afford it? I'm sitting here trying to find a way to afford/get a new TV so I can get an Xbox 360 just so I can get GTA V.

I have no idea. I intend to not buy a TV at all due to their cost and that I barely like TV. Got my computer for that anyways, so.

I bought half of a 55" 3D TV recently. It's nice for Xbox and watching general stuff.
I think GTA V is going to come out on PC at some point... the Xbox version is slow. At least PC version should be tweakable.

Amd I don't have a laptop. I don't play GTA on the laptop unless it's SA-MP.

How do people afford this
In this society, those who can afford extravagant luxuries will purchase them, and those who can't afford extravagant luxuries will purchase them. Everything's debt-driven.

How do people afford this
That's not even the worst. What happens is, people who have large positions at big companies get all the traffic pointing to them so their kids can have HDTVs and their own Minecraft servers, at the expense of small business owners, whose families have PCs from 2005 and can't afford groceries every week.

Yeah. Big business, quite frankly, sucks. Small businesses are the heart of true capitalism.

Big Business is self-destructive in my opinion.
Every time small businesses get steam-rolled by one or two big businesses, service plummets, quality sucks, pay is shit, and community-building takes a massive hit(since big businesses generally remain detached simply due to the fact the "higher ups" of the company don't really consider themselves attached to every location they pop up in)
But the fact they can give cheaper goods thanks to their massive logistics and very deep pockets tends to leave many small businesses at a disadvantage. Customer loyalty won't always save your business.

In my experience, TVs have just gotten cheaper and better over the years. If you're willing to settle for something relatively modest, TVs are EXTREMELY cheap compared to 50 years ago.

We're still using our 8-10 year old Sony TV, which works quite fine(minus the fact half the 5 option buttons on the TV have fallen out, requiring either remote usage or sticking a thin object in to click)
Personally don't care too much. As long as the TV works, and it's a sufficient size. We mainly use our other electronic devices(tablet, PC, phone) most of the time(hell, we hook up either the PS3 or laptop to TV to watch stuff online from there)

Tax return implies job.
Not to mention it's just whatever you gave as tax given back due to being more than what you actually owe in taxes. It's not like free money or anything.
I'd rather invest my tax refunds...

RE: How do people afford this
Probably because mid-range consumer goods are actually pretty cheap relative to other typical expenses. Like I wouldn't even be able to keep a car on the road but I could have a TV if I wanted one.

Yeah it's not "free" money, but it's money.
Personally I'd rather invest it too. I don't like spending money as it is. I like to say that I'd starve before I spent money on food. I'm a money hoarder.

In fact I've already invested and intend to grow that invest slowly, while forgetting said money exists.
I'm like the banker of the family, I got money everywhere and even when I "run out" I still actually have something hidden away.
Maybe I should convert to Judaism?
