RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Necroing Old Threads

SR, can you please address this issue? I don't mind old threads being necro'd if the OP is posting again (or still posting), or if just some new information on the topic is being provided, but overall the majority of the necromancy of threads on SS have just been plain annoying lately.

Sometimes I think I'd be going into a really new thread where I could put hours and hours into the discussion, only for a majority of the posts to be from 2005. Huh

Overall it just makes the forums look unorganized. I think the issue should be addressed and if there's nothing really relevant about the necro just have the thread locked is all.

I hope I'm not the only one having an issue with this but it just discourages me of coming here – especially going to the School Talk and Venting Forum where it happens a majority of the time. The clutter is unnecessary and I just think for the betterment of the forums it should be toned down. Please. Upset

Necroing Old Threads

I do think we need to have a cap on necroing because a lot of it is annoying. Necro'ing is okay, when it gives new information, the Op is posting, or if it adds something to the discussion. However Bumping just for bumping old threads should be looked down upon a bit.

^I'm guilty of the same as well.

I think that some old threads though that aren't very relevant are worth bumping if part of something like History of SS (like the RATS post).

RE: Necroing Old Threads

Not sure how my presence in here will be viewed...

I think the only useless thread I necro'd that was in public view would be the one about Hiroshima. The one Aya posted got extremely useless when it was turned into "let's hate on aya, but compliment her picture" and only served one use for me in the beginning.

Other than that, I've got nothing for the time being.

I disagree. No more rules, only expectations. We're not like other forums, remember?

If bumping old threads is people's thing, let them do it. And, I mean, what's the harm?

Necroing Old Threads

Old threads can block relevant discussion.

I think we should just limit ourselves from necroing threads unless there's any kind of relevance. I can understand a necro for the SS History project, or perhaps a necro on a topic that the person didn't feel like creating a new topic for, but pointless necros, yeah.

I know it's more of a rule that I'd like imposed on the website, but it's not like you have to ban anyone for it. You don't have to hand out warnings. Just lock the thread temporarily or permanently, and if you want post after the lock and say why it was locked.

I just think the website would be more organized. I'm sick of clicking some threads that are nothing but clutter.

Beleive it or not I find nothing wrong with bumping old threads (depending on the reasoning behind it). That being said, you can see the reasoning behind most of these bumps as of late have been completeley stupid. *Ahem*moar flamewars *ahem*

Doesn't bother me either.

Sure, it's a mild annoyance sometimes, but I don't really see why I should do anything about it. Just ask the person to stop if it bothers you.

There's also the ability to block new posts from certain forums from showing up in the recent list.

Not true at all. I'm pretty sure we all have the mental capacity to merely skip over the discussions that aren't pertinent to our interests.

The reasons we have for establishing rules against bumping are not as grave as the effects such a rule would have.

I've been doing this ever since I joined. It really has not been that hard at all, I just open up the threads I want to view in new tabs and the final new thread is opened in the tab I was using, which will make it so I don't have to look at the new posts anymore.

Having the website be more organized and useful is a worthwhile goal. The forums are one part of that, but there's a lot more to the site, as well.

If there's something to discuss, let's figure out how to discuss it. Smile

I don't think "threads containing clutter" is limited to old threads. Of course, people seem to differ on what they consider clutter vs. something worth reading and responding too.

I think one solution to all of this is to interact in several mediums, not just forums. For example, chat, Hangouts, and even collaboratively-edited documents. I encourage everyone to check out the chat, and join us on some hangouts.

Btw, there is arguably worthwhile material buried in the over half a million posts on these forums... maybe there are better ways of digging through that and adapting into a useful form than bumping threads, but maybe we could find some way to figure out what has happened over this past decade+ that's worth explaining in summarized form to new or old users.

(That's part of the goal of the SS history project...)

And I'll put this in bold, since it's also the tl;dr:

I think it comes down to people being mindful of what they're adding to any thread, whether bumped or new. The forums can have a lot better overall quality and value if people make a habit of doing that...

Well I don't want to block entire forums. I'm just kind of sick of entering threads in the School Talk and Venting forum, thinking they're new and have mature, interesting, engaging, relevant, etc. dialogue being traded only for it to be a thread that was made when I was 7 years old with short-burst posts from users who don't even visit the site anymore.

It's just getting tiresome at this point. All I ask is for that sort of activity to be kept down.

"free speech under the constitution only guarantees the government won't stop him saying it and does not guarantee his right to say things and have no consequences at all as a result. also i completely doubt that he is motivated solely by "i'm saying it because i can" and is probably motivated by a more shitheady motive like "i think it's funny to annoy people and Rustle Le Jimmies™ and is just hiding behind the first amendment to try to deflect any consequences or make you realize that being allowed to annoy people is a superior moral right. you can still disdain someone for doing things for dumbarse wankery purposes and you have evne more right to ban and insult them for it" ~Trar's friend about Potato.
