RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

I can't take much more of this shit
School has been killing me lately. For the past couple of days, when its near the end of the school day (about 7th or 8th period), I feel a big, deep depression come over me and i feel tired and unable to do anything for the rest of the day. I can't take much more of this shit. I don't know what to do anymore. My dad is opposed to online school and homeschooling, so I'm plain fucked.
I REALLY NEED SOME SUPPORT AND HELP RIGHT NOW. SOMEBODY, PLEASE.
I am 14, and have my own computer repair business! And I'm a small time DJ also. No joke.
If you need tech support, PM me. Everything's free of charge. I use Teamviewer in case it's needed.

RE: I can't take much more of this shit
I've had jobs like that. Where my heart sunk everyday driving to work. Where I would want to cry on Fridays because I had to come back as soon as Monday. Where minutes at work turn into hours, hours days, days weeks, weeks years. It can be soul crushing.
But trust me, it passes. Things change. Things improve. When you have to ride out the storm just ride it out. When that last bell rings learn to leave it behind. Enjoy what's left of your day. You can do it and it's an important life skill. You can even reach a point where you can hold on to that kernel of happiness even when school and work are torturous. You need to hang on to that little bit of positivity. That's hope. And there's always hope. Sometimes you just have to shine a little light on it. It may sound corny but it's true.
Stay strong!
If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.

Sorry i wasnt able to respond lately. This dosent happen outside of school at all. My dad thinks school is for you to get a good job and to be sucessful in life, and he dosen't really support my career path. My dad is opposed to alternatives because he said that since he went through it, that i have to as well.

Those are both very common reactions. :(
Have you seen some of the basic videos from credible people talking about what's wrong with school... like Ken Robinson's Changing Education Paradigms (linked in sig)?
Would you be able to show that, and some other videos, to your dad?
Also, what about the video above?
Some parents do eventually change their mind. One of the things I've been discussing with those in LCL2 is the question of how to help parents and educators move past fear of the unknown, and plunge into these conversations about doing education differently.
Here's another of my threads on LCL2: LCL1, Session 2: Interest-based learning
What kind of plans does your dad have your you future, if he doesn't support your career path?
