RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

-Bill Gates. I love you!

Fu no haha. I'm just asking for those who do not plan on rolling with traditional teaching methods, For me, I'd rather spend $20,000 I don't have for a new car. Just my idea. But if someone "ahem" -Bill up here ^- were to foot the bill for any school you want, would you do it?

and can someone please tell me how to upload a pic from my pc? This method here wants a link. As you can see this pic of ol' Bill here is a bit big. Razz

RE: Would you go to college if I paid for it?

When I decided to add education to my undergraduate degree I ended up with so much money in scholarship and grants that my school and my meager living expenses were covered. My grades were summa cum laude and I'm good at tests. It's been a kind of saving grace for my life.

Still. I'm done. The only way I would go back to school is if they promised to cover my living expenses FOR LIFE.

However, if I get fired from teaching, again, I might consider it.

I used to just want out of teaching but over these last two years I feel like I've really started making a positive difference for kids who are outside the box or however you want to put it. The crazies and the weirdos. I feel like I'm on a one person mission for these kids. Like I'm the only one in their corner. The kids who positively hate school have been going out of their way to greet me and talk to me. When a kid tells you he feels like you're the only one in the world who cares about him it's pretty incredible. The state can't put a number on that!

Sorry for going off topic.

If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.

Would you go to college if I paid for it?

I would. It would actually make things easier, since I wouldn't have to pay for it and the government wouldn't have to pay for it, at least initially. (It's fucking obscene how the US government is pocketing BILLIONS from crushing student loans.) I'd have incentive not to waste my opportunity, either, due to my benefactor's charity.

Of course, I'd need to prepare first.

That's really awesome of you! Tell me though, how much can you really do freely in a state school (I'm assuming you work at one) I'd like to work at private or charter's.

RE: Would you go to college if I paid for it?

college is quite possibly the most useful bit of education. Since you can actually go and learn what you want to. And you'll be doing that. While getting a fancy paper that tells others you earned that.

Except the problem is students being hurled into a mountain of student loan debt and then not being able to find a job for whatever reason.

So yeah, I'd take it. I'd definitely take it. Learn stuff I actually care about and not be suffocated under years of debt? Why not?

If I can do it in any country in the world and have all expenses paid for... maybe. Could be interesting.
