RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

My grandmother just made my little sister cry and she's being very cruel to us. She's taking everything away cause of stupid homework. -sigh

I hate when that happens. It sounds like your grandmother has anger issues.

Homework issues

Your grandmother sounds horrible.

We've been having a lot of stories about parents punishing their kids over things like grades and homework. I wonder what kinds of conversations you can have with your grandmother about this issue, Cianna.

RE: Homework issues

Sadly she is horrible, and there is no talking sense into her. My life depends on my electronics at my home. I'd rather be dead than spend my entire childhood living in a cage.

Yeah, that could warrant an abuse hotline and police interference.

Nobody should have to deal with that. Do you have any plan for getting out of that situation?

I have no way of escape but I got my things back. I kinda got it back dishonestly so she started bullying me again. She expected me to apologize so I did. I would expect her to apologize to me for her wicked deeds and lack of courtesy but I admit I was at fault too. So at least I got my stuff back, doesn't excuse what she did to me and my sister though.

Next time she physically abuses you, call an abuse line or something.

That's a valid fear. And I say, one I had too.

However if it's true that your grandmother is physically harming you I highly suggest reaching out to a domestic hotline source of some sort or the police.

It's likely going to be stressful. And you're likely even going to regret it. It's going to get worse before it gets better.

Not every situation is going to be exactly the same as it varies by state and even just by case. But fortunately for you I have a lot of experience in this subject. Again, our situation is not going to be exactly the same, I can only tell your what happened to me.

About 3-4 years ago I got my father arrested for hitting me. He was arrested immediately because of the fact that the cops came right after an incident of him beating me. For you it'll probably be different, unless you do what I did and get the cops there right after the situation so you can show whatever marks. That will likely have your grandmother arrested on the spot. However if you just call without a situation actually happening right then and there you will probably have a social worker sent to your house and they'll interview everyone and assess the situation. Then a decision will be made to arrest your grandmother or not and put you in protective custody or not.
I'm not 100% sure what ill happen to you at this point because it was just my father being arrested, my mother wasn't and so i stayed in the house.

Anyways, after this there will be court shit and social worker shit and it'll be pretty hectic and stressful and you'll be wondering if you made the right decision. You might even be tempted to say "No I lied." Don't. It's fine. You grandmother will probably be put on some type of probation, have some type of mandated anger management. And it's very likely there will be an order of protection. This is very similar to a restraining order. like my father wasn't allowed to come home despite being out of jail because he couldn't be in the same area as me, once he was allowed back into the house he wasn't allowed to really talk to me or anything, and he had anger management and drug tests and like AA type things (since he was an alcoholic).

And get ready to see a social worker often. We had a social worker coming to our house like every week talking. It's kind of like a therapy thing.

But after that it's really up to your situation.

I know it even knowing what's possible is kind of scary. But it's worth it.
That day my dad got arrested was the last time he hit me. And he's not an alcoholic anymore. Granted he does still drink occasionally but it's 100x better. Just remember it gets worse before it gets better.

Or, you could just wait until you can move out. But that's something to think about. Assess risk and all that.

All the luck to you.

I'm a girl ffffeck

Homework issues

I felt scared and unsure when I called the police a couple years ago because I couldn't deal with my clusterfuck of a family. I couldn't get things across right to the sheriff who responded to my plea, and then my father defused things so he didn't have to deal with the reality that he was and STILL IS stuck in an abusive relationship (verbal abuse towards him from his wife, degree of abuse from him because he's a bad provider) because he's a Good Christian who Made A Commitment, who Sticks It Out through Thick And Thin even though it's almost all thin now. And it's not like he's still eating shit with a grin on his face. I hear him muttering.

And then there were several external factors that caused the relationship to fracture even more and my mother vented her stress and anger towards me so often I still hate her. At least things are smoother now and I'll be out sooner or later.

Good luck with this Cianna. Hopefully you can have better luck with the authorities.
