RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Windows XP's final days (and school tech)

Think about your schools technology. If your school is like many, most of the computers are running Microsofts Windows XP operating system. It is 12 years old and support is coming to a close. But, the problem is that now after April 8 we will be hit hard by viruses, malware and ransomware. And usually it is a while before we get an upgrade. According to my computers teacher, in 2006 we still had a handful of computers running Windows 9-fucking-8. Uh huh. Windows 98. Come on.

We have dropped support and that means we have hit a zero day forever. If we go onthe internet on April 8 or past on XP computers, we're FUCKED.

And I have strong concern for YOU too. You have a large chance of running XP. Save yourself.

Stick with Mac OSX or Linux based systems.

Or Windows 7/8 because not every is rich as fuck/tech savvy...

I'm glad my school actually has PCs with good hardware.

As for the poll, what if you use both Linux and Windows 7? Razz

A lot of the classrooms at my school still have old Macs. We actually had to use those Macs back in 2011 in Graphic Arts in middle school. I think they just got new computers now, but I can't be sure.

Oh, and these Macs in particular weren't well maintained, and were slow as hell.

To be fair, it's expensive to upgrade a lot of computers to the next OS. Many business still used XP for a long time after Vista came out, and I surmise some still might. Could be the same with most schools.

Vista was not well received when it came out. Not surprised many sticked with XP.

My school has a combination of computers running Windows XP, Windows 7, and plenty of brand new Chromebooks. There were some cheap netbooks that had 7 on them, but people kept breaking them (physically) and they were slow as hell, so that's why they bought those new Chromebooks. But, people will somehow manage to fuck them up too.

My school desktops use Windows Vista cleverly disguised as 7 so we don't freak out over it sucking. The laptops use World's Worst Linux Distro.

I actually wish I never upgraded from XP. Unofficial updates exist, and XP is more stable and simpler than 7. And it's prettier.

I liked Vista when everyone hated it.

Then again I had no problem spending time solving the countless problems it presented...

I still have vista. It was awfully slow when I first got my computer. I have better hardware now though so it isn't as bad. I'm supposed to upgrade to 7 soon, though.

I may seem evil at times, though I just want to make a point. I like to create real discussion.

My opinions on all Windows themes I'm aware of:

Windows Aero, it's pretty, but it's also overblown and too flashy. It looks a bit better on Vista than on 7.

Luna (and Royale as well as Zune) is simpler and it doesn't feel showy. There's a reason I have UXTheme Patcher (so I can use Luna/Royale on Windows 7.)

Metro (including the Metro UI "Start Menu" and Desktop) is just FLAT, though.

Classic..... it hasn't aged well.

I also wish Watercolor (XP Beta Theme) was available for 7. It's pretty.

As for Embedded and Royale Noir...they really just look like small edits of Royale.

The 98 Plus! Themes are just color schemes for Classic.

My classmates can't even figure out how to turn them OFF! They think just shutting it turns it off when it fact will break a laptop in weeks.

Windows XP's final days (and school tech)

The first two schools I went to rolled Macs. Can't remember what OS, but we had to boot up a virtual machine to an earlier OS IIRC to play games.

The third had a dark, out-of-the-way room filled with old Win2000 machines. In the last two grades it was state-issued Mac laptops for us, with sleek-looking XP machines in the (considerably brighter) computer room.

RE: Windows XP's final days (and school tech)

The admins at my school are generally Mac centric, so it is dominated by Macs, but there are also Windows 7 computers and netbooks running Ubuntu. I saw one machine still running Windows XP, but no more than that. I don't think that machine is maintained by the admins, but is maintained by one of the teachers instead.

At another school I went to, there was one computer lab with computers running Windows 2000. At that time, Windows 2000 was a current, "modern", supported OS (XP was only 1-2 years old). Within a year or two after I was there, that school no longer had an official computer lab at all.

I often forget about the existence of the thanks button on these forums...

If my writing happens to be too sporadic, too brief, or missing information, call me out on it.
