RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

I already told you about the abridgment of my rights by "authority". For simply knowing/using my rights I was suppressed by both a teacher and principal. Now I need INDIVIDUAL action to be taken, because my union is not that popular.

I have considered:

-contacting the ACLU to have them maybe sue my school district

-growing the popularity of my union and holding protests

-aaand I'm running out of ideas. What is the best course of action for me to take?

How much are your parents willing to support you? You could possibly get this to a small claims court.

I'm not too sure about what the ACLU could do. They might offer support, especially considering how blatant the teachers restricted your freedom of speech.

Perhaps you need to put posters in front of your school, preferably when there are no adults. Wear discreet clothing and make sure you are not recognized. And I highly do NOT recommend vandalizing the school.

EDIT: I recommend small papers that aren't likely to get noticed. Not even moderately big banners that will get noticed. Being subtle is key here. Perhaps you may want to put banners around your town, like laundromats, etc.

Even with that, I'd say it's still worth a shot. You'll never know. And who's to say school's the only place to do this? I'd say put this anywhere where kids hang around.

What if you put them up and held them in place with supahglue or epoxy?

None. They disagree with me and say the Supreme Court has said that the school is acting inside of their rights. Bullshit, I know my rights. I collected Supreme Court cases and laws that prove it. And they just violated my rights, TWICE, big-time. So, I've got no support on the parental side.

Well to be honest, if you are talking about distributing your own works, depending on the circuit you live in they can have a prior review. At least that's what my research has come up with.

Pretty Much my only signature...I'm mainly a lurker....you can find me on the IRC (or on DnE and their IRC).

Maybe this could be done: simply threaten them with the ACLU. Practice used complicated language and legal terms. School dictators like to think all of their students are obedient yet dumb minions, but he will be impressed that you know all your rights and can speak so well. Practice is key here.

RE: Recommended Courses of Action

I tried that, it nearly got me suspended. I was nearly suspended for passing around a student rights paper upon other students request before class. They said it was disruptive because of the domino theory (they can censor speech if it is disruptive) of which I have no control over. More bullshit. Because more students were talking about how I was punished instead of what I did to get it. They caused more disruption than I.

They wouldn't even let me state my rights, for God's sake!

Hmm.... I'm wondering whether it's possible to try to turn this into a national media shitstorm somehow. I'm still thinking how.

Interesting they mentioned the domino theory. That's exactly what happened with the Arab states. Guess they don't want an Arab Spring inside the US youth indoctrination system.

The Domino Theory? The cold war ended LONG ago, and Im sure the domino theory was pretty much disporved when we lost Vietnam and nothing happened...

Obviously an issue with the education system, following outdated policies and thought.

I still think it's worth telling the ACLU what the school did to you. Basically, they were infringing on your right of freedom of speech. I think that could go on as a violation of constitutional rights (freedom of speech, freedom of spreading ideas, etc).

But will the ACLU even pay attention? Will they see that factory-model schooling is shit or will they turn a blind eye to the system because it's 'education'? I really, really hope they do the former.

Don't think the ACLU has seen the factory model as BS yet, but they have a blog dedicated to stopping the School to Prison Pipeline, so they do give a shit about students' rights.

Yeah, the Pipeline is a related issue. The zero tolerance shit and increased police-itizing (for lack of a better term) of school infractions has led to more and more 'offenders' being charged with actual crimes for things that back in my parents' day would have just resulted in a trip to the principal's office and maybe a detention. And its creation was helped along by monied interests in the related industries and the administrative officials who went along with it (or were simply bought out).

Ugh. Sometimes there might be up to 3 police officers at my school.

I seriously don't understand the excessive punishment these days. Interesting that you point out corporate interests a possibility, Trar. Schools aren't exactly making a lot of money these days. Hell, back in 7th grade, my middle school ran out of paper and couldn't buy more. It'd be easy for officials to get bought out by companies out of desperation, regardless of ethics.

I read a bit about this in Fast Food Nation. I've posted about this before, but a recap is good every once in a while: the schools in Colorado Springs accepted money from various companies to display billboards and to get the students to pull PR stunts, not to mention vending machines in the schools. I also heard that Exxon-Motherfucking-Mobil sponsored bullshit textbooks about energy and climate change for one particularly foolish district (not in Colorado though, I think).

There was a cop on duty in my last school, but he was rather friendly. Kind of glad I never had the chance to earn a visit with him.

I hate when information on the net disappears. They have archive thing that will grab images of sites, but that usually depends on traffic I believe. Many sites simply get the home page taken. Others are literally catalogued from homepage to every other part of the site.

Beats not having such a system though.
