RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

RE: Ew.

Well, I guess we'll see how that works out for her.

Summery of article: "My parents placed a lot of senseless restrictions on me when I was younger and when I'm older I'm going to put the same senseless restrictions on my kids and force them to play sports because everybody loves sports rite rite?"

Who am I? Who are YOU?

RE: Ew.

I can actually understand where she's coming from but if there's one thing that's lacking here that's so crucially important yet never mentioned is empathy for the child. Will the child even be good at sports? I understand physical activity is desirable at an early age but don't go overboard. If you're going to force restrictions like that, at least have some flexibility, empathy, and the child likes it. If it's not working, go back to the drawing board.

My reaction to the article

I am 14, and have my own computer repair business! And I'm a small time DJ also. No joke.

What a punk. I can get some of the stuff on the list but not everyone likes sports and you can't really make your siblings like each other (I'm the oldest of 3 boys and 1 girl and it's always been a constant state of war, then peace, then war cycle between us.)

This misplaced idealism usually wears off when the person in question actually has kids. Hopefully that would be for the better.

"I’m going to make my children take school seriously, but not too seriously."

It's better then my mom's ideology: School and college are more important than happiness, other people, sanity, and God.

For anyone who remembers me going on an archive binge: Thank you all. I know I ended it being a drama queen, I don't really agree with the ideology anymore, and I'm really not the same person I was (I went through a neopagan phase!) but still this site was the first online community I was in. I graduated from school and turned 18. Time flies. KFC Nyan Cat, June 20, 2019.

Quote:I am going to make them play sports.
I didn't develop my leadership skills from sports. Sure, saying I developed them by playing chess and manipulating people doesn't sound pretty, but forcing kids to learn leadership isn't exactly a proper way of teaching leadership(because what if they believe leadership is the art of forcing people to do stuff, rather than the art of getting people do something without threat. Like that one military leader of WW2 about making a person want to do something, not making them to do it, is what leadership is)

Quote:I am going to make them mind their manners.
Better make sure you mind your own as well. If don't practice what you preach, it'll be a problem.

Quote:I’m going to make them turn off the television.
Or...ridding of a TV for their younger periods and letting them enjoy the other alternatives beats "GET THE *bleep* AWAY FROM THE TV KID!".

Quote:I’m going to make them be nice to people.
People tried to be nice to Hitler. He laughed at their sissyness and started a war.

Quote:I’m going to make my children take school seriously, but not too seriously.
I think it's more of a case of how seriously the parent takes it...

Quote:I’m going to make my children like each other.
Sibling rivalry will always exist. Can't make em like each other, you just have to treat them evenly and arbitrate neutrally.

Quote:I’m going to make my children take care of themselves.
Confused Don't most already get taught to care for personal hygiene?
