RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

I'd say when in doubt it's worth asking whether you can get any kind of art courses.

Yass has been acting rather suspicious. He registered after the Indian spambot attacks but his responses are human enough. In fact, he hasn't even tried posting any kind of advertisement links.

It's too late???

Or perhaps this user is legitimately trying to start discussion, though bumping old threads from 2008 doesn't seem like a good way of doing that.

It's never too late to start doing what you love; that's one of the myths perpetuated by school and parents. If you are stuck in the languages, though, I'd say try to make the best of it, while taking an external course for arts. You may actually need those skills later in life. (i am assuming that by languages you mean foreign languages, not going over the same english grammar crap again.) Good luck!!

There is time for everything. Human lives are remarkably long, and you still have yours in front of you. So stop, reflect, and take a course of action you deem right.

Good luck to you in your endeavours. Hug

I'd like to disagree...so I'll disagree.
Then I agree to disagree too.

I see why you disagree with my statement over human longetivity. What I mainly meant by this post, is that life is actually longer than you think. Your brain has a way of tricking you into believing time is running quickly, even if time isn't that fast. Combine this with the old age one can reach in modern society, and your life isn't over as quickly as your brain would have you believe.

It's too late???

But your effectiveness decreases with age. Long age is meaningless if old age makes you less effective.

Effectiveness, however you define that, can increase with age, as well as decrease. It depends on a number of factors, including your own efforts.

Yes, 80 year olds are often "less effective" then people earlier in life, but there are counter-examples even of that... consider Eric Kandel, who's now 84... and still at top mental capacity:

Total effectiveness, I should have said, which equals both physical and mental.

RE: It's too late???

"Total effectiveness" would probably include a variety of things beyond personal mental and physical ability. Things like, one's network of allies, personality and mindset characteristics like resourcefulness, one's assets in various forms, and so on.

It would also include consideration of things that take away from effectiveness, like not being taken seriously, being actively hated by people one depends on, and so on.

"Effectiveness" also depends a lot on your situation. If your universe consists of constant street fights and having to defend yourself against your hostile children, you'd define "effectiveness" very differently than in a different kind of environment.

It's too late???

A simplified clarification I provided then Razz

I'm just pointing out that long age requires further analyziation depending on each individual, and that humans, who only live up to an average of 80+(with "old age" being around 60+ and individual freedom at 18+, leaving an average of only 42 years of possible development before a decrease of energy and health, with 30+ being considered the peak)

Or at least how I see it vaguely.

Good point about the timeframe of life.

In some ways, that's a very short time, but in other ways, that's a very long time.

I suppose a lot depends how you use it.

In many lives, most or all of those years are used up following paths set by others, or using time on things that don't matter in the end, aren't enjoyable along the way, and so on.

Being locked into factory-model schools for a good chunk of it doesn't help.

But, in today's interconnected world, in contrast to most times and places in history, a lot of people do have more opportunity to choose their own path and not have to just do what their culture, family, mentors, government, or circumstances dictate.

That leads to another problem, though, how to make the most of that freedom, rather than spending huge amounts of time being lost, getting stuck in habits and routines, sleepwalking through life, and all that.

This short clip from David Eagleman about time provides some hints for how to experience more of it across the lifespan:

Watch on YouTube

And, on that note, the Eric Kandel clip above is rather interesting from a few angles. It also leads back in to the halted discussion at DoA's One-stop Psych Shop, including the question of psychoanalysis and what therapy really means.
