RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

The Problem

I can't take it anymore. Countless hours of useless work day by day is just making me go insane. It's become so bad, I don't even want to learn. I don't even want to anything. When it finally is the weekend, I feel like it only lasts a couple hours.

What is the real problem?

Adults. Adults are the real problem. They were the ones that made this shitty school system. They were the ones who corrupted millions and millions of kids endangering their career and their future. It was them that forced kids to go on in an endless cycle where when you grow up, you forget how awful it was and force your children there because you think "Ooohhh, it was NESSECARY for me, and it is NESSECARY for you."

Bullshit.

You all know damn well that you are judged by your ability to sit down, shut up, and complete uncountable assignments that wreck both your body and your brain.

And that is how childhoods are spent on Earth.

That's just it. If you are creative, friendly, humorous, or something like that, but you aren't smart, they screw you over and you feel worthless.

That is how they do it.

Since you participate in nothing else, since school becomes the basis of your everyday life, you begin to feel worthless.
For many of you, that is your motivation.

Acceptance.

You want to pass. You don't want to look retarded. You don't want to bring home an F and get grounded and do it over and over again.
But I am going to tell you, it's okay.

It doesn't matter.

I don't care if you are dumb, I don't care if you have a disorder, because when it really comes down to it,

Nobody should.

We are all equal. Just because they want you to get good grades, it doesn't mean you need to. There is most likely something else in you. A gift. A passion. And it is getting overshadowed by this prison filled with kids who hate it just as much.

So don't let it get to you. Your parents don't decide your life. Your Teachers don't either. All they do is try to raise you so you "fit in" with a society that has now been destroyed and will take ages to rebuild.

I have finally decided,

And I hope you do too,

I am not going to let school wreck me.

The Problem

We may be a product of the previous generation now, but we have the potential to become something more.

Our generation will not be consumed by the influence of those who came before. We will define ourselves, and we will be victorious in the face of a defeatist system.

Hey! I just thought of something.. how about making a global umbrella school or something?

And yeh... 99% won't do shit. But never doubt that a small group (1%) can change history. It's the only thing that ever has. Revolution .. and a revolution doesn't have to be violent. Remember Going Postal? The law says golems are property so they save up and buy themselves. It was the quietest, most socially responsible revolution in history.

If I seem rude to you, please call me on it gently.

That's the spirit Smile It's the spirit of rebellion -what they try to suppress in us. It's nice that someone saw the real problem- the adults may not be the ones who invented this shitty system, but they keep supporting it which causes more damage than most people notice. I salute you in the spirit of sincere rule-breaking. *salutes you*

I would refer you all to The Desert Fox's sticky thread on here, but that would be redundant.

Yeah, so am I... and I've meet a bunch of even older adults who also recognize that the way factory-model schools work is messed up. Some are building new kinds of schools, many support unschooling... putting all adults in one category isn't the answer.

But as for not letting school wreck you, and taking steps to transform how education works to be learner-centric... absolutely.

Even though I'm kind of guilty of the same thing, I think if you were in my class you would consider it a bit of a reprieve from that.

If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.

I'm curious. I appreciate your efforts already, going from this post alone, but I'm still curious.

That's... not a global umberella school? This is more of a thing that's a name to put on a diploma...

RE: The Problem

Yeah, KA doesn't provide credentials or the benefits of personal interaction with people who get to know you. It's more of a tool to use as part of some other learning plan or paradigm.

Justin Schwamm has been writing out his plan for a network of schools that are autonomous and co-owned by the learner-participants. That might fit with what you have in mind, Trekkie.

He's envisioning small, local (un)schools, but I think online ones could be part of the network, too... and, why not apply the same ideas to the college level?

G+ link to part of it... check out the gdoc linked there. That's just one of Justin's assignments for this class meant to help people flesh out their ideas for new schools, but what do you think of that?

I have yet to submit assignments, but I'm thinking about an online and semi-college version of something along similar lines.
