RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Is going to a democratic school worth it?

I am 14 years old, and I am currently failing most of my classes at my modern public school. I feel that I cant do anything productive inside a school that you're forced to go to. The democratic school in my area is open to sign up for, but I want to know if it is worth all the paperwork.

I'd do a little bit of research into the school before deciding. What can you do and what can you not do? This will probably vary a bit from democratic school to democratic school.

From what I know of schools of this nature, (Summerhill's the only one I know of) they're heaven. Good luck.

Definitely check it out and look it up. I'd say since you have nothing to lose, go for it.

Interesting though. What's the name of the school? Would give us a better idea. Also, I'll say it again: it's definitely most likely worth it. The indoctrination at public high school is NOT worth it.

I must agree with the thread. Do the research, and if you're confident you like what you see sign up. Even if you can't get a clear picture of the situation there you don't have much to lose from signing up, but you could have a whole lot to gain. I'd like to know the name of the place as well, so we can help you out. I had to leave public school before I got to grade 8, and from what I keep hearing on this forum and occasionally seeing I feel I dodged a bullet.

And welcome to SS! May your education be fruitful. Donuts and coffee are right over there.

I ate the last of the cookies and tipped all the coffee down the sink. Too bad. Nobody wants a fruitful education because fruit is gross.

Dammit Trar are you trying to drive new members off? Razz

But yes, I forgot to welcome you. So Wilkommen zu der Foren. (Hope I got that right. Haven't practiced German in quite a while...) Why German? Because it sounds pretty cool.

I wasn't talking about his public education Herr Gwedin!

*sigh* I'll pick up some more donuts in the morning.

If you're already failing, why not? Most democratic schools would blow your prison, I-I mean school, out of the water.

RE: Is going to a democratic school worth it?

I'd learn more about it, but it most likely would be worth it. You could probably help shape how the school works, have more flexibility, and all that.

Is there any information about the school online for us to look at?

It's called the Delta Program, it's a nice little school on Penn State campus that lets you roam freely among the downtown area when you don't have class (for instance, you could go to subway for lunch).

I can. There's a website on our district page.

It's worse than a prison, if you ask me. Instead of the death penalty they should just send convicts to go to our school for a year

It's the Delta Program. I know some guys that graduated from it, and they're some of the best people I've met.

Bloody Hell.

I appreciate your posts here, but I'd keep the replies to our posts in just one post of your own if I were you.

As for the Delta Program: it looks good at a glance. Reading a couple of reviews though, you may want to watch for bullies. I hope the environment is conducive to your needs as well; apparently it wasn't for one reviewer's child. Other than that it looks quite good, it's been years since those reviews at any rate. Feel free to find more reviews.
