I gave my opinion on high school and said that if someone really really doesn't want to go, they should drop out without everyone riding their backs. I really tried to be civil, I did, I was calm and saw the other argument too. There were some people who agreed, but there were other people who just called me an idiot, told me high school was so easy, or just to suck it up. And then a few days later someone made this huge, ignorant post that said that everyone complaining about high school needs to shut up and something along the lines of "it's not supposed to be easy, you're either stupid, lazy, dramatic, too afraid to ask for help, so just deal with it!!" and she got soooo many positive notes. I wanted to shoot myself because I knew it was in response to mine, but not after punching her first.

I just don't see how someone could be like that. I get that high school isn't the worst place for most people, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't bother on improving it. If it makes people happier then why the hell can't we try? This bitch needs to go to school in NYC to see how it feels like. 8 hours in school, 2 hours in transit, and two hours of homework is just ridiculous. Add in how much sleep you need and you only have 3 hours of free time.

Why the fuck are people so attached to school? What, are we still under the false illusion that it gives us a great education even though we forget most of the stuff we learn when we're out? Do we really still believe we have to work this much in order to be respected? And don't get me started on the whole "I hope you have fun being pregnant and working at McDonald's and just being a general low life" attitude when it comes to people who drop out. Like, I mean, just shut the hell up!

But then again, people have had misdirected views on things every decade in time, only to realize years later that we weren't thinking too smart. Even in the future, we're probably going to think about how, I don't want to say stupid, but how we were more wrong then right in right now, the present.

Interesting. Arguments like that can be frustrating, but they're a reminder of the need for those who question school to educate others about how:

(1) it doesn't work for some people

(2) the 19th/20th-century model is generally out of touch with the needs of today's interconnected, media-saturated world

(3) there are better ways to do things, all around

It can be hard to handle these high stakes, emotionally charged conversations (or non-conversations) for everyone. A lot of people's identities are wrapped up in how they think about school, as are their basic worldviews.

I've been thinking about how the techniques described in this book Crucial Conversations might apply to these education-related interactions. That's a whole thing to discuss, but one question to consider is why people express the views they do. What's valid about what they have to say, what's mistaken, and so on.

I think one step to changing minds is to help people consider that even these online interactions can be a form of learning. School isn't the only place where learning can occur... and if people are open to that idea, it might help them come to think about education in a new way.

Easier said than done, perhaps, but it's something to try.

Good points xcriteria. I think it depends on whether the other party is willing to listen in the first place, though. So many online discussions go nowhere or turn into flamewars simply because of the participants' pigheadedness. Not to mention the number that were precluded from really getting somewhere in the first place (think console wars). I am only somewhat shamed to admit I was like that way back in the day. In my defense, I was 12.

"just because you don’t like homework doesn’t mean there’s something wrong" well yeah, it doesn’t. but that’s a reall simplistic way of putting it. why not look at WHY people don’t like homework? in the 1900s, for example, homework was seen as anti-american for infringing on the free time of american students. but once the russians started doing it, america didn’t think it could afford to be left behind and just randomly put it in. but really, what does homework add? extra work? view homework in the context of requiring hours to do and having a lot to do in one day, one after the other, and consider the fact that this is fucking shit and nobody likes doing it. do you think grades go up???? do you think just "putting up with it and getting over yourself" is for the best because it helps you to just accept the way something is with no hope or desire of changing it and gradually getting emotionally detached and subtly viewing all your impressions and opinions as invalid until you can only get opinions from outside sources????

most homework is either

a) shit that’s simplistic as hell and just requires a lot of busy work with typing and referencing to sites you just googled and this warrants an A+

b) tedious and poorly explained that requires pain staking adhering to a set of criteria that isn’t relevant outside the subject in school. take an english task fro creative writing, and the task says “you must write creatively by choosing from this list of scenarios and working from there”. never mind the people who can’t creative write to save their life. course, you’d expect that maybe school could help with that???? so why have they spent over a decade at school and can’t creative write????? maybe because there’s something wrong with the way it teaches????

c) a memory test of what you’ve already gone over and already know that teaches you nothing new

d) the teacher didn’t spend any time on it and it’s just shit

i literally cannot remember a single piece of homework that taught me something new, built a relevant skill that had any real use, or was anything i could feel like was an accomplishment, or productive. why is completing a random assignment that just wastes time productive? wouldn’t it be more productive to use the hours spent doing homework to, say, write your own, independent creative fiction? make models to submit to the steam workshop to earn money? practice martial arts? counsel a sad friend? volunteer at an animal shelter? all things that improve your skills at something a lot more, have lasting, more rewarding emotional rewards and potentially financial ones, and aren’t just forgotten immediately when the week ends, t hat you could do if you weren’t doing homework. in psychology studies, it’s not concluded whether homework is useful or useless or not, and given the nature of psychology studies, that means whether it’s useful or not is pretty much random and not determined by the fact that it’s work at home.

the work’s pretty much the same sort of work that you’d do at school, but given that most people forget most of the stuff they learn at school and that most of the work you do at school also teaches you nothign and is just a bunch of memory tests, why should taking up what’s supposed to be our free time doing what we want supposed to improve t hings?

is that a valid reason for disliking homework for you - that it accomplishes nothing, takes away from time that could be used for actual accomplishments, and in fact can create bad habits (i know it did for me, and i was doing it the way i was assured would work by teachers and etc)? or is every possible dislike expressed by teenagers automatically whiny because you think teenagers just seem whiny and “getting over it” trumps “having a valid complaint” because you think everything would be easier if people were more like you?
