RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

RE: why does school make writing so boring?

Boring ass topics. I blame the mandatory state curriculum and their shitty and outdated topics.

I was never a big fan of 19th century English literature. Both American and British(some exceptions, but not many). So damn boring.

RE: why does school make writing so boring?

I was pretty good at writing essays. Well, except for my crap grammar(sometimes I find the more excessive rules unfollowable. Plus language is not perfect, so sometimes the rules must be bent for a better understanding).

I think the main difference between college and HS was how in the latter we had to either agree or disagree with the topic. In college, the professors often liked my essays(though when graded for grammar, I took a bit of a beating grade wise) because I approached a topic from my own view rather than a simple agree/disagree and why(typical of the school setting. No real freedom to discuss)

In my essay I'm arguing for the story so I have to agree on it being good. In my opinion I don't care for it.

RE: why does school make writing so boring?

School makes writing boring because they make you write about irrelevant topics, without a lot of flexibility.

I honestly wish schools had some kind of class where the kids could freely write and make their own stories. I can't write my own stories in school unless it's Tutorial. I mean, kids could get seriously interested in writing if they wrote about things that were relevant to them. School doesn't believe that, though.

When my brother was in the fifth grade, he got a writing prompt where the topic was "Explain why you love school."

Just subvert the format, go meta, and analyze the textbook and the story of you reading the textbook and having that assignment.

That real life story is still "from" the textbook, even if it isn't "in" it. Smile

Agreed. A school based on story dynamics and game principles. This New School Creation course I'm taking is all about constructing the "narrative" of your proposed school, how you'll explain what it's all about.

I think stories themselves, reading, writing, and living them should be a creditable action, in or out of class.

Some schools are already transforming, lots of people are planning new ones, and all of this discussion could even be counted as education. The question is just how to go from the acts of learning, to putting in a "credibility framework" format that replaces grades and traditional credits.

Companies make their own certifications, like Microsoft... why can't we?

(09-23-2014 08:50 AM)jfeld11 Wrote:  Hey everybody,
I'm sorry to bother you with this but I'd like to tell you about my essay writing service for high school and college students.

We write essays on just about everything and we are extremely affordable.

Please visit my webpage for more information.
http://writesessays11.wix.com/essaychief

Essay writing service? Hmmph. Learn to vocabulary.

Firstly, "sorry" and all remorse-related words have a connotation of wishing to never again do the thing the speaker is sorry for, yet you posted this same spam three times.

Secondly, "extremely affordable?" A thing is either affordable or not. There are degrees of cheap, but not of affordable. "Affordable to many," yes. "Extremely affordable," no. It's almost as bad as "very unique."

Aright, let's look at the site. Oh, a free wix site. OK. I guess there isn't really anything wrong with that, just puts me a little on edge.

"do NOT use school email!" I hope you don't write essays with such capitalization.

"Plageurism" is not a word. "Plagiarism" is.

In conclusion, go away.

Hello, traveler.

This is an ancient account I have not used in a long time. My views have changed much in the intervening months and years.

Nonetheless, I refuse to clean it up. Pretending that I've held my current views since the beginning of time is what we in the industry call a lie. Asking people to do so contributes to moralistic self-loathing. "See, those people have nothing damning! I do! I'm truly vile!"

Because you can never be a good person with a single blemish on the moral record, I thought that simply entertaining some thoughts made me irredeemable. Though I don't care for his writing style, William Faulkner presents a good counterexample. He went from being a typical Southern racist to supporting the civil rights movement. These days we'd yell at him for that, probably.

People are allowed to change their views.

Nevertheless, this period of my life has informed some of how I am today. In good ways and bad ways. To purge it would be to do a disservice to history. Perhaps it will not make anyone sympathetic, but it may help someone understand.

If, after reading all this, you still decide to use the post above as evidence that I am evil today, ask yourself if you have never disagreed with the moral code you now follow. In all likelihood you did, at some point. If some questions are verboten, and the answer is "how dare you ask that," don't expect your ideological opponents to ever change their minds.

Schools also are very restrictive about the topics you write about. I can't write anything with violence in it. The only exception to this is this year, I made a journal entry about a fictional Soviet soldier in WW2.

It turns writing into a chore...well, more of a chore depending on what your view on that is to begin with. Instead of being used as a means for general creativity/expressions, it's just another rigid and regulated job, used towards the fulfillment of a good grade as opposed to something productive or helpful.

Maybe if your objective is one side of the conflict.

If your objective is for a greater purpose beyond petty nationalistic conflict, then the outcomes may all be beneficial!
